haha I experienced the same thing except my parents did pay for my first year. I've gotten lucky and received scholarships that have paid for almost all of tuition. I make an hour commute because student housing is way too expensive. Just apply for a ton of scholarships and hope that you get some. Go into the workforce for a while. Figure out what you wanna do. Unfortunately some parents are like that. If you work for a while eventually you will age out and be eligible for financial aid if you still wanna go.

Unfortunately some boomers just don't get that the system is getting more and more rigged for their children as they get older. Yet they expect you to take care of them despite them doing the bare minimum of supporting you as you transition to an adult. I've noticed that, as the collective age of this site has increased (since you know, you're here forever) there is a really bad mindset of "Fuck you I got mine"

If I'm being blunt my biggest regret is not taking a gap year when my debt was still low. I would have been able to get a year of financial aid, banked some money to quit my job (working part time ruined my life and made me depressed so my education really suffered) and kinda thought about the future. The added benefit is that when my dad coomed himself to death back in April, the loans he had in his name would have been discharged. The only reason I can see going to college right out the gate is if you stay in the dorm when you turn 18 and try to learn not to be autistic. I was 21 when I moved to college where I did so no point in staying in the dorm then. But go out and enjoy some youth anon. Get a job. You're debt free. Savour that feeling. I have a mech e degree that I realized I should have done electrical right in my last semester, 75k of student debt, and a dead end gis job that I only make 58k at. There's more to this world than wage slaving for kikes. If you need something to do, maybe go get gis certified from a course and go and work for some company doing that. They always need people at the lower spectrum and you would probably start at 40k

This. I went into a top rated college (top 25 world rankings). I was coding since I was 15 and like BillG and MarkZ ended up dropping out of college to start a tech company. Any regret you ask? Waited until my final year to drop out.

The only advantage to college is a STEM specialized degree (I had comp sci/physics and took poli sci for fun). The only other advantage is finding cofounders with complimentary skillsets. With tons of cofounding sites and a fucking pandemic this should not be as much of an issue today. During college, I was doing primarily startups and women, with some vidya. Had 1 failure, 1 quick exit that paid for my college (0 debt). The current company is what I dropped out of college for and is a multi-million dollar company. Should expect a big payday in 24 months.

The boomer generation simply went to college (paying a tiny percent of what people pay now) and got a job. When it comes to colleges not being what they used to be, DYOR. The value is simply not there anymore, frankly it's inept to go to college unless your parents simply don't care about the cost whatsoever.

Find out what you want to do. Plain and simple. Finding a trade in many many cases pays much better than having a college degree. A lot better depending on what you do. There are only a handful of college degrees that will get you a job. And so going to college without a clear path is simply not prudent.

Take some time to find out what you want to do.
My friend is learning to be a welder, this pays decent and it's possible to make 6 figures.
If you're interested in IT, start by getting your A+ certification. You can get a job simply from having one of those and the sky is the limit in terms of that career path.
Coding is an extremely lucrative career path and will continue to grow. Research coding boot camps or simply study online from the plethora of information online, if you know Javascript or Python, you will make bank.

You're young so don't worry too much, but realize that the sooner you are disciplined enough to commit to a career and not stray the path - the better off you'll be financially and the sooner you'll retire.

don't go to school, do a coding bootcamp that's oriented towards getting you a job when you finish the program. Often times they're cheap or even free. The free ones are the best ones because they make their money off of contracting fees once they place you in your first job, so they're dedicated to getting you a job and making sure its a position you'll want to stay in for the entire contracting period.

After you've been a software dev for 2 or 3 years you can pay your way through school without difficulty if you want to do something else.

Try to live near a college while you do this, and even do things on campus/live with college students so you don't miss out on the "college experience". At most colleges you can take advantage of things on campus even if you dont have a real ID at the college. If theres an event that requires an ID just say you left it at home. Most of the really cool stuff will be stuff not directly related to the school, but that students go to, like punk shows in the basements of shitty rentals.
