DOT isn't really trying to kill ETH. It's backed by the web3 foundation though and it focuses more on interoperability than ETH does. Cosmos and DOT are both good holds if you have ETH. Most likely ETH is the main winner in smart contract platforms, but there might be a few smaller players that recieve a little bit of adoption like Algorand and Casper Labs.
