My current holding are 10% BTC and 90% ETH. Looking okay so far. I've 1 K to burn thinking of splitting it 50/50 between ETC and Ether.

start off by buying btc with coinbase. If you want a better deal you can go to localbitcoins, or it your card gets rejected like it did to me (buggy site) then go to virwox where they'll charge you a kiketier percent. Then open up a wallet, if you're a poorfag then blockchain is your most secure bet. Then open up a bittrex account, deposit btc there and trade away.
