If you choose the strike and expiration even remotely intelligently it isn't. You "give up" the potential infinite upside of all stocks within a time frame. But that rarely happens anyway. And if you are assigned you still made profit, even if it wasn't the same amount of profit as holding the underlying.
Assignment rarely happens and if it does, you have premiums you can use to immediately buy back shares of a stock that is already climbing well past expectations. That is a good thing to be doing. You can also buy puts to cover if you don't want to actually get rid of your shares.
Covered calls are the least risky plays there are and are the only ones allowed in IRA accounts for that very reason.
