I have held through worse. Truth is I can’t swing. My stack is too big and the taxes I’d have to pay would negate any potential gains unless we go to like $11 or lower. Could happen but fuck it. $1000 or $0 I’m at least waiting until staking to sell even a single LINK.

I never understand this. If you bought within the past year and sold at $20 and bought back at $15, that’s like 30% (assuming you bought at $3 avg). Is that not worth the extra taxes? Especially if you kept making gainz on that this year if it goes up again (before paying taxes)

I know you can’t predict but it doesn’t have to drop to $1

What happens when you swing let’s say, 1k link, here and there. You lose some you make some? I’m aware crypto to crypto is taxable but what am I getting taxed on if I still hold whatever it is I made or lost for over a year?

nah bro, even linklets are starting to feel that pressure. I swing trade like 100 link of my 3k stack i got at 50 cents so my short term gains keeps expiring and paying $20k+ off what was $60k just the other day doesn't seem worth it.

>> No.21581941

>>21581549
Not that guy but timing the swings is also something I don't trust myself to do very well. So while you do get a dip from $20 to $15 for example, that's only if you time your selling and buying perfectly.

When you then account for the fact that every time you swing you risk the price shooting up and forcing you to buy back in at a higher price or wait for an even bigger dump, and the fact that even if you do time it right you're rewarded with taxes on tokens which you presumably have not and do not want to cash out yet, it's not that interesting.

It also means you have to watch the price movements like a hawk and that gets tiresome.

Of course, you can make money doing it, and people do so.

yes i did. you can only claim 3k per year that it carries over for the next few years at 3k a year. HOWEVER, if i make 18k+ profits for that next year you can write it completely off.

>> No.21582035

You get taxed on the net gains/loss.

The reason people in 2017 got screwed was they did trades (didn’t hold) and therefore owed large taxes on their gains for that year, but oops, they couldn’t pay them Bc they lost all their money before 2018 tax season.

This only happens if you sell, buy back in, and then lose it all (and then *dont* sell prior to Dec 31). So if you lose between now and EOY, make sure you sell again so you can realize those losses to offset your gains and avoid those short term trading taxes)

I’m not in a tax bracket to worry about it that much, but yeah for those with larger stacks I see it’s better to try to hold a year if you believe long term and then sell on a day you think it’s overvalued then (surely a lot of these whales cashing out are doing this to avoid that tax)

Lower tax rate for selling after 1 year.

The higher your tax bracket, the bigger incentive you have to wait 1 year and avoid paying the taxes you would on normally earned income. But if you make almost nothing, maybe you don’t care.

I’ve never made enough money on crypto for it to matter, but some commenters here have $1M in assets. Think it they sold they’d have to pay, idk like 350k taxes on that, compared to just 150k if they wait a year. That’s a whole 200k. If you knew 100%, sure you could buy 20% cheaper but that’s a lot of pressure for no guarantee you won’t fuck it up or misread so that’s why many choose to hold through that when they have big boy money.

For us in the $10,000s or less, it’s not as life or death, especially if we’re not in the top tax bracket (my marginal rate is like 25 or 30 so I only have to win 10-15% for it to be worth it)

Kek never selling is less to do with taxes and more to do with staking. Even when I decide to actually sell some sometime probably next year, I only plan to sell 20k link and keep 10k link for staking passive gains for probably life. The 20k link cash out would just serve as the cushion and realized profits for living my life and being exactly where I want to be
>>21583522
Yeah exactly. It’s not about wanting to pay the tax, it’s about having to declare it already before rules become more clear. Even if it’s just straight up capital gains tax, trying to swing this would potentially cost me an extra 20% in taxes if ChainLink / crypto decides to peak less than a year from now, a risk I’m not willing to take
