In the US you guys have a wrong idea of liberalism and socialism.
In truth the push for Reaganomics and lower taxes for the wealthy under the so called "trickle down" economics is much more a lobbying effort than anything else.
Progressive taxation is one of the best American inventions it's a shame you guys left it

Don't ask what happened in the 50s, that's the wrong question. Ask what happened immediately before it: WW1, followed by the Great Depression, followed by WW2.

Basically, wealth destruction on a massive scale. After the cataclysmic changes of the first half of the century, the top of the bracket was laid low, so comparatively everyone else looked much better off. With so much less capital, the comparative value of labor was much higher, which is why even high school dropout manual laborers were being paid a middle class salary.

It was never going to last, and it's a good thing that it didn't. It's just sour grapes and unironic Marxism to believe otherwise.
