Depends on where you live and what you want to get out of your news intake.

Neurotypical casual:
- Just change your homepage to fucking google news

If you aren't interested in digging deeper (or just don't have the time) into what's going on around you, reading the headlines and looking at the pretty pictures that google's aggregation of "content" should keep you acceptably informed.

Well-tuned & well-read:
- Your local paper
- Washington Post or New York Times (U.S.), Globe and Mail (Can.)
- VICE News
- Bloomberg

Spend an hour making the rounds with these four every day and you'll probably have a well-rounded enough picture of what's going on in the world. I tend towards the New York Times simply because they aren't as hard up for cash as WaPo and therefore don't cut as many corners on style, but content-wise there aren't too many differences that someone knowledgeable enough is able to discern. G&M is a NYT/WaPo copy for Canadians, don;t know what Brits read. VICE News (as distinct from the rest of the VICE family, which is tabloid garbage by and large) does tend toward excessive theatrics and pandering towards youth issues, but the quality of their international coverage has improved over the past year. Bloomberg simply because this is /biz/.

Complete fanatic:
- Your local paper
- WaPo/NYT (U.S.), G&M (Can.)
- VICE News
- Bloomberg
- Politico
- Al-Jazeera English, including commentary
- One of: Mother Jones (U.S.), The Walrus (Can.), or The Guardian (U.K.)
- The Economist and one of: National Review (U,S.), National Post (Can), The Spectator (U.K.)

This kind of diet is really only for people who are seeking some sort of career in politics or the media, but be content that you're most likely the biggest news junkie on your block. Basic coverage provided plus more in-depth political and international coverage from the more partisan outfits. At this stage you might just want to keep the additional outlets as a barometer (cont.)

God damn I haven't hit character limit in a long time.

But yeah, keep them as a barometer to see how the various political tribes that infest your specific area are reacting to the outrage of the month. Partisan media is a double-edged sword in that it needs to feed the need of its subscribers/patrons, who want their various ideological fantasies confirmed with lots and lots of smart-sounding words. If you want to know all of the angles of an issue that can't fit into media written for the average joe, take that issue and see how partisan media responds to it.

Politico by contrast is for hopeless politics nerds (such as myself) who masturbate to copies of Hansard and the Congressional Quarterly. Lots of D.C. machinations and meaningless celebrity tripe but sometimes Politico spots big issues before the rest of the media picks them up. The CBC and BBC have tried to incorporate Politico-style programs but they all suffer from various biases that come with having a couple of dudes curate coverage, so tread carefully.

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

Is there a way to get these for free? I think I'd go with Globe & mail + Bloomberg and some Al-Jazeera for international but they all seem to make you pay.

Yeah, there's the rub as they say. There ARE ways to circumvent paywalls conveniently and legally under some circumstances.

Most universities and public libraries have institutional accounts and often keep archives of the country's national newspaper. Some also have digital accounts. If that isn't your thing, many coffee shops get newspapers and offer them to patrons for free.

Good, convenient news coverage does come with a cost, whether that cost is in dollars or your time and patience. The trend towards paywalls and the like is also increasing, not the least because internet advertising yields a pittance and most media are scrambling for dear life. If you're willing to pony up some money, I believe most newspapers offer reduced rates for electronic-only subscriptions. I think.

That's all I can offer though. Never really had to take in my media the street way since I work in media and get a lot of it from peers and my old uni.

If you're paying tuition you're paying for the program. Which means you're paying for the subscription.

Use it!

I've heard there are magazines/journals that offer good stock tips for subscribers. Does anyone know of these? From what I know, the paywall is usually relatively high but that it can be worth it.

Just do your damn research on the company in question. Most of these tips are near worthless or are available at less expensive sources.
