The significance of the Barrick investment is that it is a starting-gun for people to stampede into the mining industry. Institutional investors and the general public are now going to see it as having Buffet's sanction. And the significance of his changing his mind about gold at the age of 89 will not be lost on them. The mining industry is so minuscule and neglected that only a small amount of new investors will send market-caps soaring.

Cash equivalents are cash because they are accepted as money in large transactions. When you're dealing with that much money, the only thing a counterparty will accept is TBills. Berkshire runs one of the world's largest reinsurance companies. They have hundreds of billions of dollars of potential liabilities. They also have the greatest insurance managers in the world, but it's more of an insurance company than a traditional conglomerate like Samsung, Tata, or General Electric. If Berkshire's general re was at risk of failing (geico is pretty much impossible to implode) it could potentially crash the world economy. It would get bailed out in a day.

I call up interesting businesses fairly regularly and tour them. Sometimes they can accommodate or have someone that does them. Sometimes smaller ones can't though, or maybe Aurcana might not because of liability (trips and falls when walking the property). Always worth a call. I love business and learning about different companies, so even when I was a kid I'd try to check out a different business when I travelled. Probably been through 100 different manufacturing companies, small and large. I recommend boat builders (amazing to see how they turn fabric and resin into a solid boat), leather manufacturers in Italy, automotive factories (although they do more assembly in those than actually crafting), also pipe manufacturing is really neat to see, and block manufacturing (engine blocks)/casting, CNC shops are neat too. I'd like to hope that Buffet is returning to the principles of his father, even in his oldest age. I'm reading through Howard Buffet's essay on gold now, and it reads like a /pmg/ post. How on earth don't more people know about this?

"When you recall that one of the first moves by Lenin, Mussolini and Hitler was to outlaw individual ownership of gold, you begin to sense that there may be some connection between money, redeemable in gold, and the rare prize known as human liberty.

...

The subject of a Hitler or a Stalin is a serf by the mere fact that his money can be called in and depreciated at the whim of his rulers.

...

Unless you are willing to surrender your children and your country to galloping inflation, war, and slavery, then the cause of gold demands your support. For if human liberty is to survive in America, we must win the battle to restore honest money."

He talks about the policies of FDR, but doesn't mention him by name. Perhaps thought it would be too inflammatory?

*

"In a free country, the monetary unit rests upon a fixed foundation of gold or gold and silver independent of the ruling politicians. Our dollar was that kind of money before 1933. Under that system paper currency is redeemable for a certain weight of gold, at the free option and choice of the holder of paper money."

...

"From 1930-1946 your government went into the red every year and the debt steadily mounted."

...

"Before 1933 the people themselves had an effective way to demand economy. Before 1933, whenever the people became disturbed over Federal spending, they could go to the banks, redeem their paper currency in gold, and wait for common sense to return to Washington. That happened on various occasions and conditions sometimes became strained, but nothing occurred like the ultimate consequences of paper money inflation. Today Congress is constantly besieged by minority groups seeking benefits from the public treasury. Often these groups control enough votes in many Congressional districts to change the outcome of elections. And so Congressmen find it difficult to persuade themselves not to give in to pressure groups. With no bad immediate consequence it becomes expedient to accede to a spending demand. The Treasury is seemingly inexhaustible. Besides, the unorganized taxpayers back home may not notice this particular expenditure — and so it goes."

That, or he himself, is afraid of the way things are about to go.

Note that he's not gone into Silver, the historically more public-ended PM (which would move better along the conecpt of public fear), which matches his ethos of going after undervalued goods and has a higher potential for profit.
No, he's gone into Gold. The one thing he's shat on all his life for not making any money, and only being useful as a value retainer. He's bracing for an impact; that, or he's going to try to short it in time for COMEX (which even then, why not Silver miners?)

There are some parts that jump out and literally echo what's going on today:

>Also, when you find that Lenin declared and demonstrated that a sure way to overturn the existing social order and bring about communism was by printing press paper money, then again you are impressed with the possibility of a relationship between a gold-backed money and human freedom.

To me, this massive printing and the sudden rise (even though they've been LARPing for years) of antifa this year seem to go hand in hand almost. Handouts by the billions and these leeches start coming out of wood work demanding more (and yet less government, ironically and unironically).

>There is only one way that these spending pressures can be halted, and that is to restore the final decision on public spending to the producers of the nation. The producers of wealth — taxpayers — must regain their right to obtain gold in exchange for the fruits of their labor. This restoration would give the people the final say-so on governmental spending, and would enable wealth producers to control the issuance of paper money and bonds.

Enter Judy Shelton. The mere mention of going back to a gold standard has most politicians coiling up like a scared snake. When we began deviation from the standard when Howard mentioned, you gradually saw more and more control go to banks and government, getting us to the point we're at today, literal slaves to our jobs making cuckbucks for those promoting more work for middle class and less wages, just saying, "hard times, gotta save where we can so get the fuck back to work."

Thanks for sharing that link, it's another eye opener for us all to think about

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I wish most people were aware that, without gold, you really are nothing but a slave. If you can't protect your toil, if the people in power, at a moment's notice, can steal the reward of all your labour, what can you possibly be, by definition, except a slave? The more I think about it, the more horrific appears the idea of confiscating gold.

The socialist would plead that government knows better than the individual, and that it is his duty to be enslaved. But we know that that isn't true, and that, insofar as a society is socialized, it is inferior.

Not if they go to zero. The stock market right now is a bubble that is about to burst, and unless you have real currency (as opposed to fiat) you won't survive the transition. 5-6 years unemployment, non-performing stocks to the point where you have to withdraw your 'value' in order to pay your bills, and the potential that you have to flee to another country and set up shop there. You can't do any of this without PMs, gold preferably.

Yes, but miners leveraged, but also inherently riskier. They are companies that can go bankrupt or have a bad time etc. You can reduce the risk by investing in the ETFs with a broader selection of miners like GDX/GDXJ/SILJ, but make sure you also have some metal.

If metals go up in price, it's not a guarantee that your chosen miner will. If we go to a PM standard, there is also a risk of nationalization, total stock market meltdown, etc.

Have some of both.

If you bought the top in 1929, then, adjusted for inflation, you had to wait 63 years before your stocks were consistently going up again. And that's according to the CPI. Adjusted for real inflation, who even knows if you would have made your money back, even to this day. The stock market crash, when it comes, won't happen in nominal terms, as in 1929; but, in real terms, as in Weimar Germany, it will be even more calamitous.

there's no limit to human stupidity but when you go below 0% i'd imagine things would start to break in weird ways.

I don't think banks would want to say hey, here's a $100 loan, and just give us back $99. it's not sustainable and it's not capitalism.

If the fed said they would compensate banks and pay them a dollar for giving you one, then that would work but also wouldn't be sustainable.

That was happening at the very top of the housing bubble. Banks were offering 100% no-deposit loans AND to cover expenses such as moving, insurance for the first year, and similar shit. When I saw the first TV ad selling that I told my parents to sell their shitty rentals, but they didn't. Took them years to get out of that hole.

You Metal Fags wanna know what's really going on? I'm at a BC resort up in the Rockies and it is FILLED with Very Rich Actual Boomers, and their boomers kids and such. This isn't THE END but the next step in the ongoing NWO plot from the illuminati days. Breeding the next class of slave. The Elites noticed their post scarcity initiative wasn't working, so had to dial it back a little before full mouse utopia took place. These "/polfags/" are exactly that, a aggressive tribal class to act as a middle management and enforcer unit for the next few decade or so. Yes, Gold/Silver will make you a SHITLOAD of money. NO, we are not going to a PM standard just yet, but enough wealth will be transferred to them to ensure a proper breeding program is achieved.

I think it's kind of the opposite of what happened when oil went negative - in that case people holding oil contracts were so desperate not to RECIEVE oil (because they didn't have enough storage for it) that they were willing to sell the contracts at any price, even paying people to take contracts of their hands, causing huge negative price spikes.

With silver and gold it's the opposite, big players are being forced to pay higher and higher amounts in order not to DELIVER silver or gold (because they don't have enough to part with), causing huge postive price spikes.
