Are airlines a lost cause? Back in march i was expecting a V shaped recovery thinking the covid stuff would be over in a week or two.
That is not the cause and this crisis has shown just how balanced on the edge most major airlines are, their margins are razor thin and most are operating at a loss and getting into debt, i think it will take years airlines specifically to get back at their pre covid level.

Everyone knows what a disaster for China the 1 child policy was.
China's debt to GDP is about twice that of the US. A lot of that is very poor quality debt that'll have to be dealt with at some point.
People forget that there was talk in the 80's of Japan being an equal superpower to the US and the Yen rivaling the Dollar's position.
The only real reason that China is a problem is because the US is fading in it's own right and becoming unable to lead the other western democracies to present a united front.

I'm not talking about the US though obviously since their real estate situation is definitely more fucked than anywhere else, you should do your own research in the REITs you can buy.

Problem with airlines is that companies will bleed money for several years and if you invest right now your investment will become worthless due to share-dilution.

Airlines need bankruptcies to consolidate and get much better margins. The more money gets funneled to the good and bad, the longer this will take.

I reckon the problem is crippling amounts of government debt.
Plus central banks providing life support to over-indebted governments and zombie companies by keeping debt servicing costs artificially low, which inflates asset bubbles at the same time.
Plus crony capitalism which prevents the efficient allocation of capital. Kodak being the most obvious example of this recently, but I'd label the banks during 2008 as being the most damaging case.
You're right that most western governments are guilty of this, but the US is unique because they can't devalue the dollar as easily because everyone else uses it too (in finance, to buy oil etc.)

The only end I can see is currency debasement and (hyper?)inflation. That would probably mean the end of the US dollar as the global reserve so I really hope there's another way out.

Either way, gold and big cap stocks are the way to go.

Europe is generally worse off than the US.
Also the Euro is a terrible currency that most of the countries using it don't like because they can't devalue their currency to offset inefficiencies.
It only works if there's some internal mechanism for rich countries to directly pay poor countries, and Germany and a bunch of northern European countries hate that idea.
But covid did push them into that direction recently which is good for the stability of the Euro, so who knows maybe we'll see a proper fiscal union that create a real competitor to the dollar. Time will tell if they payments become a regular thing, or this is just an exception.

It's currently profitable, has low debt, but I'm looking at why their 10Ks show less gold produced and sold by a large margin between this year and last. Is this because of higher gold prices? Lots of mines got shut down due to the lockdowns, thus productivity greatly suffered. Mines aren't a linear business, either. You look for high deposit concentrations in drilling, once you find them you have to dig to get to them, that means staggered or stalled material production since you're just moving top soil. There's also reclaimation, depending on what country you're in and the size of the mine. If they closed a pit last year they have to refill it and terraform it exactingly in the US. That's not necessarily true, though, as they can do due diligence output, or outright delay it up to depletion. And I'm sure whoever oversees that (MSHA, EPA...) isn't trying to hammer down practices during the pandemic.
