I started stacking in 2006 or so, and was an adult in the subprime crisis. It was like $800/oz in early 2009 to above $1,900 in the fall of 2011.

Gold prices tend to spike when there are serious economic risks, namely inflation, or even financial Armageddon. This thread is earily identical to the conversations I had back then, so I hope me writing this helps some of you. We even had the same people that hyped gold in ways that ended up being counterproductive. These fanatics believed that a return to the gold standard is inevitable as hyperinflation ensues from central banks “debasement” of paper money.

The gold prices rose sharply when real (inflation-adjusted) interest rates became increasingly negative after successive rounds of quantitative easing, like what we are seeing now. imo the time to buy gold is when the real returns on cash and bonds are negative and falling.

Anyways, about the crash: When the 2011 selloff started, despite very aggressive global monetary policy, global inflation remainly fairly in check. Yes, we all knew things were getting more expensive, but it was hardly the hyper-inflation I was warned me of. While base money was soaring, the velocity of money collapsed, with banks hoarding the liquidity in the form of excess reserves. Ongoing private and public debt deleveraging kept global demand growth below that of supply.

(2/3) At that point, commidity prices in general adjusted downward in response to weak global growth. And gold followed the fall in actual vs expected inflation. At this point the "smart money" phase was continually moving into other assets because gold didn't provide any income. Whereas equities have dividends, bonds have coupons, and homes provide rents/use, gold is solely a play on capital appreciation or value storing. Now that the global economy was recovering, other assets equities or even revived real estate provided higher returns. By that time the US equities had vastly outperformed gold since the sharp rise in gold prices in early 2009.

In 2011, the more positive outlook about the U.S. and the global economy implied that over time the Federal Reserve would exit from QE and zero policy rates, which meant that real rates will rise, rather than fall. This, of course, barely happened. Every time the Fed tried, the markets reacted fairly violently and interest rates have been extremely low. I would argue that the main reason the stock market is so high now is there just isn't anywhere else for people to put their money at such low interest rates - it forces people to take on risk (sorry for offtopic)

Some argued originally that highly indebted sovereigns would push investors into gold as government bonds became more risky. But the opposite happened. Many of these highly indebted governments had large stocks of gold, which they may decide to dump to reduce their debts. There was a report that Cyprus might sell a small fraction (1/2 billion) of its gold reserves that triggered a 13 percenet decrease in gold prices at one point. Countries like Italy, which has massive gold reserves (more than $130 billion), sparked the same fear.

(3/3)I say all this to say this: Yes, all investors should have a very modest share of gold in their portfolios as a hedge against extreme tail risks. But other real assets can provide a similar hedge, and those tail risks—while not eliminated—are certainly lower today than at the peak of the global financial crisis. In an extreme credit crunch, leveraged purchases of gold cause forced sales, because any price correction triggers margin calls. As a result, gold can be very volatile—upward and downward—at the peak of a crisis. With the scenarios I see described in this thread, these sorts of things would very likely happen.

Please be very careful investing. I'm personally bullish on gold, I obviously stack and have been for a long time if you haven't gathered, but remember to not get too indoctrinated by these YouTubers and Podcasters. I wish you all the best of success and hope you all make it. Also sticc > thicc.

I hate the stupid arguments people make about "forcing people out on the risk curve". I guess it makes sense about pension funds (and to an extent insurance, but they are still relegated to high grade bonds and pass lower returns onto customers), but lower rates don't cause stocks to go up because people "don't have any other choice". Stocks go up because they are legitimately worth more than they were before under any valuation model because the discount rate (interest rate) is now lower. The sticc boy get that yields move capital flows, but not why they move capital flows. Also doesn't realize that governments dumping gold to pay off debt (fucking lol) would further decrease interest rates and push stocks even higher, making gold look more attractive on the "risk curve" monetary flows he's talking about. Not to mention that no government is ever going to decrease the money supply, which is what selling gold to pay off debt is. Follow his advice if you're going to trade on margin, but he's completely off base from a long term point of view. There is ONE tail risk in the global economy today and that is rising rates/decreasing money supply. The only way to hedge that is shorting bonds. For the rest of the portfolio, you can't actually look at stocks vs monetary printing and say they are worth the risk over rocks that move nearly 1:1 long term with the money supply.

Like I said, if you want to actively trade, it's good advice. If you look at mid-long term, it's irrelevant/misguided.

Let's look at the countries with the three largest gold reserves in the world: US, Germany and Italy.

The United States has $26.6 trillion USD in debt - ALL of US gold reserves would only be worth 2% of US debt ($550 billion at current market prices).
Germany has $2.71 trillion USD in debt - ALL of Germany's gold reserve would only be worth 10% of Germany's debt ($227 billion at current market prices).
Italy has $2.47 trillion USD in debt - ALL of Italy's gold reserves would only be worth 6.7% of Italy's debt ($166 billion at current market prices).

Debt to GDP ratios for developed countries are on average 50% higher than they were than they were in 2008, and 2008 was already pushing sustainable limits. Explain how any of these countries are going to flood the market with their gold reserves to pay off any meaningful amount of debt. Explain why any of these countries would sell of reserves for 2-10% relief when it would leave them even more economically vulnerable then they already are. Explain how in any way tail risks are in any way lower today than in 2008-2009.

One of the scenes in The Shining, the one set in the "gold room", wasn't actually in Stephen King's book and was added by Kubrick. The dialogue in this scene is eerie when you realise that it is actually referring to the gold standard.

>"Your money's no good here."

Eerie shot from the end of The Shining. The lyrics of the music in the background just adds to the hints towards the gold standard throughout the movie.

>Your eyes held a message tender
>Saying "I surrender all my love to you"

>I'll be remembering you
>Whatever else I do

Note what Jack Nicholson is holding in his right hand, a small paper note that Woodrow Wilson is trying to take away from him. The Shining is about the lie that is the American dollar and central banking, and how it all relies on people not knowing what exactly is going on.

WAIT YOU ARE TELLING ME MY FAVORITE CHILDHOOD MOVIE IS THIS BASED?

>Indeed, L. Frank Baum’s book was penned in 1900 following unrest in the agriculture arena (read: farmers) due to the debate over gold, silver, and the dollar standard. The book, therefore, is supposedly an allegory of these historical events making the information easier to understand. In said book, Dorothy represents traditional American values. The Scarecrow portrays the American farmer, while the Tin Man represents the workers and the Cowardly Lion depicts William Jennings Bryan. Recall that at the time, Mr. Bryan was the official standard bearer for the “silver movement,” as well as the unsuccessful Democratic presidential candidate of 1896. Interestingly, in the original story Dorothy’s slippers were made of silver, not ruby, implying that silver was the Populists’ solution to the nation’s economic woes. Meanwhile, the Yellow Brick Road was the gold standard and Toto (Dorothy’s faithful dog) represented the Prohibitionists, who were an important part of the silverite coalition. The Wicked Witch of the West symbolizes President William McKinley and the Wizard is Mark Hanna, who was the chairman of the Republican Party and made promises that he could not keep. Obviously “Oz” is an abbreviation for “ounce.”

Nah almost never happens. The only time in history something even remotely like that happened was back in the Klondike rush on discovery creek when a guy called Tomas Day staked a fraction claim on the creek only 45m by 10m. he dug right at the narrow end til his hands bled and found nothing, so he went drinking and met a guy called John Toop. Day sold the claim for $10 and a bottle of whiskey, and that evening Toop went up and started digging, instead trying the top left of the claim instead. He struck over 1 and a half tons of gold only 3 feet down, and that claim became likely the richest stretch of placer ground on earth.

What happened then only effected poor idiots who had no equity to begin with, what is happening now is ludicrous, parts of the economy are legally shut down and the only thing stopping the 2009 “housing crisis” x10 is a moratorium on evictions and foreclosures which the government is trying to solve by giving people enough money to buy houses.

Platinum bros, found this gem on Wikipedia. “During periods of sustained economic stability and growth, the price of platinum tends to be as much as twice the price of gold, whereas during periods of economic uncertainty, the price of platinum tends to decrease due to reduced industrial demand, falling below the price of gold.”

So platinum seems like a good way to hedge against gold? It’s down right now, which presents a decent buy in, but could rise to cover any losses in gold should the actual economic state of the world improve.
