Is there anything stopping me from buying 1000 shares of a company before the ex-dividend date, and then dumping them for par/profit a day later and collecting all my dividends? Why don't people do this for free money? From what I've been reading, so long as I bought the shares before the ex-date, i'll collect dividends even if I've sold those shares.

Because it doesn't work. Otherwise everyone would do it. There is no such thing as a free lunch

the dividend will be priced in before you buy it.

Because the price of the stock tends to go down by the same amount as is paid out in dividends.

This is exactly the thinking that lost me thousands on trading high yield tanker stocks. It's a mug's game anon, learn from those who fucked up before you.
