Explain like I'm dumb. What's the point and talk of all these coins? I've never followed this board since it's filled with threads on them

I know it's a form of digital currency that can't be tracked and could be mined by computers (am I correct), but beyond that what's it's value? What's the point? It's purpose I mean.

I ask not to jump on the coin train, but to learn since all I see now is news of bitcoin being the next hot shit than gold
