crestfallen is realistic, the player character isn't. the player only dies over and over, he doesn't actually feel physical pain from dying like he would if he really existed in the game world. meanwhile the crestfallen warrior is a part of the game world and feels pain every time he dies. if dark souls made you feel the sensation of being stabbed/crushed/eaten/incinerated every time you died, 99% of people would give up and sit in Firelink for eternity just like him

The question is why did he go hollow? Maybe since he went to new londo with the intent of making firelink more comfortable to sit in. IMO all the characters go hollow when they give up on linking the flame. That would make sense since it would allow one to hollow when they weren't strong enough to continue, so their souls can be consumed by someone who is later on.

I don't remember siegmeyers story too well, but if I remember right it only progresses because the player saves him multiple times. Maybe interacting with the player and being shown that he's not exactly a compitent warrior made him feel like giving.
I don't know if i'm remembering right but i think his daughter has news about his wifes death.
So hope of returning to normalcy being shattered+being proven as a lack luster knight despite probably have alot of renown where he was from ( he probably wouldn't have some ornate plate armor if he was a nobody) just caused him to give up.
