Would buying real estate for renting work long distance?

I wanna move to a high col city and I don’t think I’ll be able to afford 2 houses. Would it be possible to get a house in some midwestern shit hole and do it from a distance? Could I buy a shitty auction house in Detroit and fix it up? Could I do this with a rural house or does no one rent them?

Would I have to constantly travel there to interview renters?

For handling a rental you can just have a property manager handle it. If you need it fixed up (beyond routine stuff) and everything first then that's going to be a bit more involved, albeit it's often more profitable.
