Also, rearly man didn't know that Iridium, Osmium, or Rhodium existed, and even if they did, they couldn't refine them. When we talk about rare earths, we don't just mean that there are comparatively few atoms of that metal, but that they tend to be extremely diffuse in the distribution, the same way that there is 6kg of gold in a cubic km of seawater. In order to make something money, you have to be able to actually get it. Gold and silver became money because people knew that you couldn't just make more by blinking and wishing it so; that the value of their work was securely stored.

Paper (I assume you mean a fiat, or literally printer paper with the word money written on it in crayon) does not last very long. Even the cotton fiber notes the US has or the polymer notes the EU rolled out degrade much more quickly than even worthless copper-nickle coins used today. This is somewhat alieviated by them being physical tokens of digital bank numbers. You didn't prove that scarcity doesn't make something valuable; you only proved that scarcity ALONE isn't what makes something valuable. The other components of what makes good money were already described several times here.

Gem stones are poor money because they are not fungible and interchangeable. Some gems are naturally more beautiful than others. You can't easily make 1/2 gem and 1/4 gem denominations where each unit is equivalent in value. You'd have to get each piece of your money appraised in value by an outside party, which is precisely what good money (gold and silver) avoid. In the old standard, once a merchant was sure you weren't passing counterfeits and he'd seen a certain coin before, you could spend your silver pound internationally with little oversight. Because all the value assignment had been done by the mints making the coins virtually interchangeable.

No. Read my last statement. Gold is useless for most things. Things such as copper, iron, and steel were harder and more useful. To use those substances as money would have taken prevented more useful things from being made: weapons, cups and plates, chariots, fasteners, etc.

Gold's much greater scarcity is also highly important once you get trade between civilizations. In a microcosm, sure, sand could be used as money if the culture was in an area where sand was rare.
