As U.S. stocks climb to their most expensive levels in two decades, the executives in charge of the companies benefiting from the rally are showing signs of anxiety.

Corporate insiders, whose buying correctly signaled the bottom in March, are now mostly sellers. Almost 1,000 corporate executives and officers have unloaded shares of their own companies this month, outpacing insider buyers by a ratio of 5-to-1, data compiled by the Washington Service showed. Only twice in the past three decades has the sell-buy ratio been higher than now.

Data from InsiderInsights.com showed a similar trend. Over the past four weeks, companies with insider selling have outnumbered those with buying by 186%, approaching the 200% level that has tended to mark short-term market tops in the past decade, according to Jonathan Moreland, the firm’s director of research.

The pickup comes after stocks rebounded from the bear-market selloff, lifting the S&P 500 more than 45% from its March low. Now, with tech stocks at all-time highs even as a pandemic and recession rage, some executives are lightening up.

While some analysts have warned against reading too much into insider sales because factors other than valuations can influence the action, a similar spike this year and in 2018 foreshadowed equity losses.

“Our indicator is now flashing a warning sign,” Moreland said. “I’m not prepared to say everybody should sell everything and short the market because of the recent insider data. The way I’m using it is, I’m more comfortable selling some of my winners. We still don’t trust the market’s recent recovery.”

UnitedHealth Group Inc. Chairman Stephen J. Hemsley and Morgan Stanley Chief Executive Officer James Gorman are among insiders that have sold shares of their own companies this month.

Executives were one of the few groups daring enough to go bargain hunting during the market rout in March. Back then, they scooped up shares at the fastest pace in nine years as stocks plunged into the fastest bear market on record.

Now, fewer than 200 corporate insiders have bought shares in July, compared with a full-month average of 1,160 during the first half of this year, Washington Service data show.

In terms of total value, insiders sold $52.6 million of shares last week while their purchases reached $3.4 million, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Corporate insiders has shown a mixed track record in timing their stock disposals. Their rush to sell at the start of this year proved prescient as the S&P 500 rose to an all-time high in February before crashing. So did the selling spree in January 2018, when the benchmark index’s advance to what was then a record preceded a correction. The dash to bail in 2017 and 2019, however, was met by continued equity gains.

“When the market is trading as it is, very close to all-time highs, it gives the optics that insiders don’t believe the market being at these levels,” Robert Pavlik, a senior portfolio manager at SlateStone Wealth, said by phone. “It presents the appearance that they think their stocks are overvalued. It may be true, but there is no definite way to tell.”

Open-market stocks sales, excluding those set up through 10b5-b programs or related to options, that are reported in Bloomberg data in July include:

JB Hunt Transport Services Inc. Chairman James K. Thompson: $2.03 million

Costco Wholesale Corp.’s James P. Murphy, executive vice president: $1.63 million

Broadcom Inc.’s Charlie B. Kawwas, senior vice president & chief sales officer: $1.61 million

Medical Properties Trust Inc. CEO Edward K. Aldag Jr.: $7.42 million; Chief Operating Officer Emmett E. McLean: $3.8 million; and Chief Financial Officer R Steven Hamner: $4.21 million

Five Below Inc. Chairman Thomas G. Vellios: $10.3 million

CarMax Inc.’s Ronald E. Blaylock, a board member: $910,000

Yeah. Say you have the 2k minimum with the 2k leverage. You don't have enough wiggle room before you get margin called to really make the extra 2k worth it because RH has crazy "volatility" restrictions espey on options. Speaking from experience. You're better off not even using it until you have more capital. Just trade cash. Speaking from experience.

Sit down and do the actual math on how long it would actually take to reach back to $8 given their actual fundamentals.
Average down just ties up eve more capital in a loser. If your entire position was entered in at 8 then you either do covered calls or sell some of that position now (not all of it) to do other things with.
You could use that same capital to then rebuy more shares. That almost does the same thing as averaging down but caps the capital you might lose to initial investment. But that strategy is also usually bad if you keep doing it.
It is pure emotion to average down and pure emotion is how people lose.

>Im not flushing $10k down the toilet by selling the bottom when it just had a random spike to $4 on no news

This is emotion speaking. The money is already flushed down the toilet, don't fall for the idiotic "it's not a loss until you sell" mentality. The money is gone already. Throwing more money at this thing is the absolute worst thing you can do right now, way worse than just cutting your losses.

This is the standard PND chart - they run it up on hype with a tiny float while most of the supply is locked up, and then steadily unload on the way down as the insiders likely have a stupid low cost basis and don't give a shit about selling at 3, 2, 1, 0.5, etc. Cutting your losses now is probably the smartest thing to do. If you want to ride the thing out until the end just to see it for yourself, then just hold on but don't throw any more money at it.

I do want to know if this is a good idea. I have played this about as bad as i could have so far. I think this is the only good idea i have had the whole time. Ive been holding with the “never sell” mindset since i hit -50%. At this point there is no way i will just sell and lose 10000 dollars. Im not good enough to take the remaining $3000 and recoup my losses, and i have other money that im trying to do that with anyways. I do have some confidence in this companys growth even if you all laugh at me for that, but i dont expect it to hit $8 and i dont expect it until next year. I do think $4 is very attainable and averaging down below that makes sense if i have the money. Writing and selling puts seems like the only other decent advice ive gotten here, but id need to learn how to do that. Selling now at a 75% loss for no reason after ive held this long seems so dumb. Especially since if the price really does drop that much further, its just a better opportunity to average down.

Here's an example - I have a single share of BUD that I bought because I had dividend money. It's down like.. 8% or something. BUD is a perfectly viable company that'll continue to exist long after COVID is gone, but for now they're experiencing trouble.

If you're going to put more money in, put it somewhere stable. SPY, XOUT, RSP, pick a nice stable S&P fund and put your money there first. Sure you won't get astronomical gains but I put $10k in SPY a few months ago and now I'm up over $500. It's not all that much, but at least I'm not losing anything.

I'll be blunt, the most I'll tolerate on something based on fundamentals and projected growth is -30% and even then I would be hard pressed to put more in.
You have two options: Sell some of your shares and use that money to rebuy new shares. That prevents you from dumping more networth in a sunk cost sinkhole.
Wait for spikes on news catalysts or random short squeezes (volatility spikes) to sell calls on some of the shares at 7 or 8. That will lower your cost basis as if you HAD averaged down.
