Newfag here: I think I fundamentally misunderstand the purpose of puts. I've been investing for like two weeks and I made some money off of a VBIV call and I'm interested in doing puts cause that would mean betting against stocks but I don't get them, really. Since a call is a contract to buy a 100 shares at a certain price, it makes sense that people would want them if the stock goes up so that they can get a discount. But then, what are puts for? Who wants to buy a contract that lets them buy shares at a higher price than they are at after a stock's value has gone down? This obviously doesn't make sense, so I guess I'm being retarded about puts. Can someone explain this shit to me?

Calls are paying for reserving the right to buy
Puts are paying for reserving the right to sell.

With what puts are intended for, "insurance", let's say you have 100 shares of SPY, which are currently right around $300...
But you're worried about seeing a 2nd dip to levels like the last one...
You would expect to see such a dip by the time the current year is over. And you don't want to see those shares go below $270 again...
So you buy ONE put with a strike price of 270 and an expiration of around January 1st, 2021

Puts give holder the option to sell shares at a specific price. This means that having those puts shields the shareholder from taking a loss if the stock happens to drop prior to put expiration date. If a shareholder is worried about imminent downturn of share price, they can buy puts for this reason, ideally fairly cheaply at the time before the expected move occurs.

If you're not writing puts and not using them as a hedge as described, the general gist is their value will go up when share price drops rapidly.

Be Careful Declaring Value Dead
While the current market advance seems to be unstoppable, investors’ attitude is seen at every prior market in history. As Howard Marks once stated:

“Rule No. 1: Most things will prove to be cyclical.

Rule No. 2: Some of the most exceptional opportunities for gain and loss come when other people forget Rule No. 1.”

The realization that nothing lasts forever is crucial to long term investing. To “buy low,” one must have first “sold high.” Understanding that all things are cyclical suggests that after significant price increases, investments become more prone to declines than further advances.

The rotation from “growth” to “value” is inevitable. It will occur against a backdrop of devastation for the majority of investors quietly lulled into the extreme sense of complacency years of monetary interventions have provided.

As Research Affiliates concludes:

“Overall, relative valuations are in the far tail of the historical distribution. If, as history suggests, there is any tendency for mean reversion, the expected future returns for value are elevated by almost any definition.”

The only question is whether you will be the buyer of “value” when everyone else is selling “growth?”

Can you defend why someone shouldn't put all their eggs in one basket? Looking around /smg/, it seems like the alternative is to put your eggs in a lot of baskets that you know nothing about. Between putting everything in a company I've researched (SPCE) and spreading money between a dozen I know very little about (TSLA, NIO, BYND, WKHS, etc), the first is much a much better idea. Spreading all your eggs seems like a defense mechanism for investors who don't know how to just research and find one good stock that they trust not to tank.

Then I bought AMD at 2'32 with 1.000€ while I was waiting for repsol to recover. Had I invested 10k in AMD I would have won a ridiculous amount of money but that's easy to say when you know the end result. for example TSMC is a great company that makes the best x86 CPUs in the world with AMD. But they're in Taiwan, which is at risk of communist invasion. Newfag/poorfag here:
I'm heading back to university soon and I want to put away whatever cash I can scrape together so it's hopefully appreciated some by the time I finish my 5 year degree.

I've got relatively little to my name (probably about 10 grand). Is that even enough to justify bothering? If so, should I be looking at term deposits instead, or are stocks the right choice- and should I do day trading or sit tight and keep ahold of dividends?
Any other advice would be appreciated.

What you need is actual experience investing. Take like 2k and put it in stocks you trust.
2 MSFT, 2 V, 3 AMD, whatever you like.
And then you just watch them go up, go down, and learn.

You can read /smg/ and watch ThePlainBagel on YT for weeks and learn less than if you actually buy in and get your hands dirty. Knowledge is knowing what historical pe ratio charts mean, experience is seeing your account drop 4k on a single day and opening a beer without caring too much.

not against people entering degrees late, if they want it then they should do it even with 50, but it has to be reasonable and not a waste of money and time (except they have both money and time and just do it for fun)

Optometry. Because it makes money -and- because I'm interested. And yes, it costs a lot to study (already got 30k in student debt, which will be closer to 70k when I'm finished).
Thing is, the job market is cutthroat and it's only going to get worse because there's too many jobseekers for every position. From what I've heard HR departments these days basically throw darts to find applicants to interview. Healthcare is one of few stable vocations, and Optom is the best option for someone like me that's too autistic to be a doctor or nurse.

By the way, a piece of advice I was given (I don't know if this will be useful to you guys, but I figure I should maybe try and give something back as thanks) is to invest in pet care/beauty, because there's a growing population of female millenials without the social/financial capital to have children of their own that are pushing the misplaced affection onto their pets. All these new Baby characters (Baby Yoda, Mr Peanut, Boss Baby, that kind of thing) are supposedly an attempt at capitalising on the same concept.

Here's a bunch of truckers talking about Hyliion (SHLL). SHLL is not bad, much better than NKLA.

IMO Tesla is going to win the SEMI race and it's not close.

Consumer retailers aren't buying natural gas vehicles, and the gas stations don't want to spend $$$ to make them.

Most sedans and pickup trucks are going electric.

Which will make it easier for truck stops/gas stations to convert to an supercharge station rather than a natural gas station.

A natural gas fueling network is such a PIA.

1) Natural gas has to be stored cold -255F

2) Wear PPE during fueling

3) It's very flammable

Tesla is going to 4000 by 2023, easy

I'm trading on IB from Japan and I'm afraid they won't let me withdrawal so I don't want to put more than 2k in. Here's to hoping I still make it.

also I should say that even though VXX is 1x levvy and SPXU is 3x levvy, VXX still decays monstrously so both could be treated as approximately equivalent hedgies on the day-to-day
1x levvy on VIX futures is still hard as fuck, that's why they keep removing anything above 1.5x levvy, it just can't work out
