Try to look at how intense their development cycle is. Look for Git / repo commits if they're open source, otherwise try to look for clues on development in their community or youtube. XSN puts out a new build everyday now for a couple of months so that's a very good signal. Look at the roadmap, read the whitepaper, etc. etc.
