Trading is a dark profession. I'm pretty sure anyone who has ever traded at one point thought "hmmm how am I going to do it?" but the vast majority of us usually pass through that darkness and come out stronger on the other end. I'm sure they're going to try to enact some laws to fuck over retail traders even harder. They had those planned before this and now they're just shining the spotlight on whatever they can to build the narrative.

Robinhood is to blame for not restricting kids like this because they're so hungry for payment for order flow, this kid is obviously to blame since ultimately the decision rested on him, those who oversee and regulate the markets are to blame for letting the markets turn into the toxic wasteland that they currently are, society itself is to blame for dwindling to such an extent that people feel the need to do stupid shit like this just to "make it" and if they fail they don't have much else to live for, internet communities who encourage this stupid reckless approach to the market are to blame, trading "educators" who sell bullshit promises to kids like this are to blame, and so on.

If I knew this kid I could have let him know in 5 minutes what he was doing was retarded and if he continued to do it, it's all the more on him. I'm guessing he was selling options on Amazon or some shit and when the assignment came he didn't have the money to actually buy the stock. Of course most brokers usually just auto-liquidate you and you'd owe the difference, so again, it's somewhat on him for jumping immediately to the "kill myself" option. But to some extent we live in a dystopian nightmare overall though. For a 20 year old kid, I can see life being more bizarre than ever. You probably don't need too much convincing to kill yourself these days.

I'm guessing he just oversized on naked Puts or naked Calls. Then when the positions went against him, he just held and took assignment. When that happened, the system said "you owe $700,000 to pay for the stock that is coming your way." It doesn't mean he actually lost $700,000, it meant that he was on the hook for that much stock and he would owe or earn the difference in theory (depending on the broker) as the stock went up and down. Most brokers just auto-liquidate you these days though if they don't like your margin position so it probably wouldn't have even gotten that far.

Options are a complete scam game on the short side if they're not part of a larger strategy. They're priced way too cheaply given the inherent risk in them, but people flock to them so they can make what they think is an easy $20 selling an out of the money naked Put against a $500 stock not realizing it puts them on the hook for $50,000 of shares and the they can lose $1,000 in the blink of an eye (even if they can afford the shares) due to the volatility of the stock they're selling the option on. It's the most risky $20 you'll ever try to make, but then when you scale it gets even worse.

Not content to make $20, someone says, "I'll sell 10 options and make $200!" Big roller right? They're almost out-earning a McDonald's cashier, and assuming the same stock they're selling the option on, all they had to do was put $500,000 up to do so. If the event they get assigned, if the stock was jumping 10 points on average per day and that was costing them $1,000 previously ($100 per point of movement), now it's theoretically costing them $10,000 ($1,000 per point of movement)! If you get a gap down against your Puts or a gap up against your Calls, or you're just trading something with a 'fast' price you're in some deep shit, but you would have to be GIGANTIC to actually OWE $700,000.

Robin hood has always had glitches and exploits and will always will, they patch someone finds another exploit it glitch, the only time they'll impose restrictions is if they're obligated.

I was pretty sure they fixed the infinite debt exploit that people were abusing on WSB for a week or two. This was literally just a UI problem that show what it costs for his assignment from selling the put, but didn't factor in the puts he bought. No other brokerage has this problem, Profit/Loss metrics would take in account his entire spread. Its just poor coding from the app is all.

Robinhood is actually pretty legit from a standpoint of being able to trade without any of the massive minimum requirements or ridiculous fees most brokers charge. All they do is extract value.

Most brokers have massive minimum requirements to even get started though. 5-10K USD at least. For someone who has only $500 and has even 120IQ a well placed call can easily 10x their account. Robinhood can get motivated poor people with no savings on the map more or less.

No one knows exactly what happened yet, Forbes makes it sound like he did a bull put spread. Basically he sold a put at say $10 and bought a put for $9 and the $10 put exercised but the $9 put didn’t so he ended up assigned to buy the shares. If that happened that wouldn’t be too bad, he could just sell the shares for a small loss the next business day. I don’t really believe this though because that’s a naked put and Robinhood requires you to cash cover your puts.
