Not at all, you're spreading your money too thin. If you have a portfolio of let's say $5k (even though I think a majority in here has way less than that) and tries to spread it out nicely depending on the companies.. then one or two companies doing badly will drag down your profit immensely, making it barely even worth investing in the first place because you end up with only a few percentages gain annually. Not to mention that you have to sit and manage everything aswell, just to make sure you won't sit on shares for a company that is burning down 6 months after you bought in.

The metric for returns is relative, the absolute amount doesn't matter until you hit levels where your moves in the market actually affect the price of the asset.

The only possible bad thing is that you get priced out of expensive stocks, because a single one is bigger than the amount you're able to allocate.

But if you have 5k you shouldn't care about any strategy anyway, just go with your gut and common sense. It's too small to even be able to assemble a strategy.
