get more news from financial podcasts instead.
polkucks will shout me down, but the economist daily briefing is good, and the longer one (The Intelligence) and the weekly one (Editor's picks) are great IF you're interested in the story. Sometimes it's about the overthrow of the corrupt government in Wazirastan or whatever and you just check the summary to see which stories you actually want to listen to.

Also, Numbers by Barron's and the FT News Briefing (every morning), Morgan Stanley's Thoughts on the Market (Every time it's Mike Wilson or Andrew Sheets), and some other shit like Marketplace by NPR thrown in there. That'll get you right sorted.

and now they have central banks in every country scamming the whole nation creating mega corporations and mega banks to control everyone

all bible quotes

If thou lend money to any of My people, even to the poor with thee, thou shalt not be to him as a creditor; neither shall ye lay upon him interest.

Take thou no interest of him or increase; but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee. Thou shalt not give him thy money upon interest, nor give him thy victuals for increase

that hath withdrawn his hand from the poor, that hath not received interest nor increase, hath executed Mine ordinances, hath walked in My statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.

Thou shalt not lend upon interest to thy brother: interest of money, interest of victuals, interest of any thing that is lent upon interest. Unto a foreigner thou mayest lend upon interest; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon interest; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all that thou puttest thy hand unto, in the land whither thou goest in to possess it

The argument for tankers is this:
>Low order book
>high average age of ship
>Oil supposedly booming next year

Basically, tankers are only in service 10-15 years before they are scrapped. A LARGE percentage of tankers will be scrapped in immediate future due to being in that age range.

Low order book refers to orders to buy new tankers. Almost no one is buying any new tankers to replace the ones that will be scrapped soon. This is because the whole industry got burned a decade ago when everyone oversupplied on ships and drove rates down. (you can see this on any tanker's 15 year chart).

The whole market is reversing over the next year or two, with the winners being those with young fleets (like stng and fro).

Oil demand projected to be super high next year is just a cherry on top because the demand for oil transport will be so much higher than available.

High dividends are also a bonus.

If you are willing to hold for a year or two, you could make a lot of money off what you accumulate now.

fellas I am new to options. I've spend a solid week reading on investopedia and watching all these damn youtubers. I have made a few moves using Thinkorswims simulation feature in order to back test some things (e.g. RSI > 70% is a sell signal, <30% is a buy signal, Moving Averages imply XYZ, MACD implies ABC, etc)

Can we have a rational discussion regarding options strategies? Do you guys trade them intra-day? Trade a few weeks out? How do you determine if the stock is going to go up or down...or do you use things like strangles and not care? Is technical analysis worth a damn?

I made about $180 today on a $SPY put (which I bought for about $800) that I purchased in the morning. I truthfully didn't know if $SPY was going to go up or down today, but as it crabbed slightly down, I sold the put. I was looking at the price of $SPY all fucking day. "Do I sell? Do I hold onto tomorrow? What do I do?" It was mildy never-wracking. If I can make $180/day doing this shit then I am sold...but I'm sure there are instances where I will time something wrong/be incorrect about direction/etc.

I’d appreciate if someone else weighed in, but my understanding is that cyclicals are companies that are tied to the business cycle. They thrive when the economy is doing well, and they suffer more when the economy is doing poorly. As opposed to something like healthcare and utilities and much of tech, that do well regardless of the economy.

Low-quality likely means companies that are seen as risky, I’d guess a lot of “value stocks” that are out of favor with the market, and have a low P/E.

options are very hard to trade lad, and best only to daytrade them. hold only when you are absolutely confident something is about to drop or pop within a time frame. if you want more time then clearly buy options with further out expiry dates.

direction and size of movement is most important. even if you are right about something going up, but it only goes up like 0.5%, your calls will still lose value. you are trading the premiums on those contracts. think in terms of supply and demand, will there be demand later for your calls or puts, or will there be no buyers. if there's no buyers you are fucked.

Time decay, volatility, and in a distant third place stock price are the most important concepts related to options. Learn your damn greeks. Also keep in mind that volatility is stupid high and this is not the norm. It is better to buy contracts than sell them now. That was the reverse from 2009-2020.
For short term contracts (<2 weeks), the time decay is exponentially faster and your main enemy. Considering the number of shares involved even a 10% gain is solid and you need to be disciplined to not get too greedy. You will feel the pain of collecting early or letting go too late but at least you aren't bagholding the stock itself.
Longer contracts (>2 weeks) are as insurance policies. I think of those as playing against big announcements, the main regular one being earnings. Straddles and strangles are good intro options strategies. You will eat potential gains with the other premium(s) but also severely limit losses.
Once you get confident enough you can start dropping the hedge.

TA is there as a tool, it's useful but dont rely on it too heavily because it still comes down to probability at the end of the day. The key thing is being disciplined about taking profits and reducing losses. Set a profit/loss target and stick to it. If you take profits at 20% and sell losses at -10%, you'll still be profitable even if you're right only 50% of the time.

You can only learn from practice. I never liked using those paper trading sites (where you play fake money in real world stocks), I feel like people will think “well I just made a million on this site, I can easily do the same in real life”. It just feels different using real money.

But anyway, start small. $500 is decent. Buy stocks you think will go up. Robinhood is ideal since it’s the very basic.

Don’t pay attention to anons that shit on your small start. You don’t want to start playing with $5000 not knowing what the hell is going on.

But just get comfortable buying and selling. You’ll notice trends, what stocks work, when to sell high and buy low. Which stocks you buy today sell tomorrow. Which headlines will rock the market. How volatile 930 and 330 trading is. And stocks which you’re willing to wait for a few weeks.

Also don’t feel pressure from anons making thousands on single trades. You don’t go to the gym day 1 and start benching 220. Work your way up.

Limit orders, not market orders.
Budget an amount for each position. If I want $1000 of PLUG that's all I will spend. I will buy maybe $700-$800 at different prices as I build my position, then I will save what's left to average down if I need to. But sometimes it's better to just take the loss and move on. It depends on what you're doing with a given stock. Know ahead of time: am I long on this stock, is this a day trade, or a swing.
If the price is too high then don't buy it; if it opens at $23.77 try to get it cheaper. Maybe it will go down to $23.15, or $22.98. The changes adds up quickly.
Do not FOMO. There will be other opportunities.
Buy RED, sell GREEN.
If you hear/see something shilled relentlessly here, or on another site, on television... It's probably too late. Don't worry about it. There will be other opportunities.
Have an exit strategy. What is your target price? What is the most you are willing to lose? (Note that poor fags are allowed three day trades per five day period. Look up the Pattern Day Trade rule.) I always know when I'm exiting.
Take your gains when you can. The tax is higher for short-term capital gains, but unless it's one of my longs like GEO or IRM or KO I'm taking my gains.
I set aside 25% of gains for capital gains tax and I don't use that for trading.
I very rarely use my gains for trading. My gains go to my mutual fund/Roth/other.
Research before you buy. Know what a company does and if they are good at it. Look at volume. There are a million other things, too. Some I pay attention to, other I don't. Very rarely does the market make sense. I like to focus on a few companies at a time and I try to make money of them.
Life is short. Eat well, exercise, read, and surround yourself with people you care about. Try to better yourself every day.
Hope you liked my blog. Good luck.

I thought I wanted high volatility (or "vega"), since this is an indicator of greater price movement, right? Or is your point, No, you want to look for low volatility, since the option itself should cost less (higher the volatility higher the premium?).

A serious bit of advice for anyone new to, or interested in options trading:

First, understand what survivorship bias is. The stories you read on wallstreetbets and the pictures people share of their 2K -> 10K -> 75K -> 190K gains aren't the norm. They're not even close to the norm. These are once in a lifetime plays that few are ever graced with the good fortune to experience. Be extremely realistic, and mentally prepare yourself to lose.

On that note, don't ever gamble more money than you're willing to part with. Options contracts can and do go to zero all the time. You can and will lose your entire investment. Don't ever chase losses, and don't ever feel guilty for taking a profit. If you sell a batch of contracts for 1K that moons to 10K afterward, don't sulk, and don't covet.

Weeklies are dangerous. Don't let the cheap premiums tell you otherwise. Be able to justify your plays, and take it on the chin if you lose.

i disagree with that dude whos penny pinching

every time u try to buy something cheap you miss out and you lose everything

and never get your chance

always pay the few cents extra

Anyone here holding BB (Blackberry)? Inb4 cellphones etc....they havent made a phone in years. The pivoted to cybersecurity and software a few years back, have a bunch of defense contracts, pretty much everything has their QNX operating system at its core. Hugely undervalued and nobody pays any attention to them yet they just keep chugging along making deals and putting their software everywhere. I figure worst case scenario they got bought out and ill turn my money into more money. Whenever I have a few spare dollars I buy more.
