Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

Serious question time. I am what one would call a permabull and I am up 50% in the last 3 months. I wish it were more but there it is.
I noticed that TVIX which is basically the ultimate Bobo ETF was up 2400% as the market was bottoming. Are there any Bobofrens here that can show a gains graph where you went in deep on TVIX and made it? Cuz if not, wtf are you doing? That was your moment

Still really annoyed i'm down massively since this time last week bros

I know it's a long haul and i'm not a day trader and do take profits, but where my gains were last Mon evening to the end of last week is still way down - it's still up a lot overall but it's hard to not look over where it peaked.

I expected the markets to go up and down, but last weeks drop was very aggressive in such a short space, for not really much reason.

Question. What's the difference in selling a covered call for say, SPY for something seriously below its price (SPY 6/19 200c) or something reasonably near its price (SPY 6/19 310c)? I know that premiums go extremely high the lower the strike price is, because who the fuck isn't going to exercise that option? So why do people sell covered calls knowing that it's 100% going to be exercised? Is it just another way to protect yourself against downturns by collecting the premium up first & guaranteeing a sell?

And what's a good way you think you consistently make money off covered calls for something you want to go long on? Like if I have 100 shares of SPY at 295 I'm gonna hold this til I fucking die, so do I sell stuff like (SPY 6/19 330c) since that's improbable and shit?

>> No.19738298

That's a really shitty spread of ETF. You should just all-in one or two of them. TQQQ is TECL + SOXL + some random nonsense, SPXL is TQQQ + even more nonsense, FNGU is the leading half of TQQQ.
If you believe they aren't overinflated on corona memes, FNGU is best. I think SOXL is safer, and it's done excellently in recent years. I also see great prospects for some of the op holdings there. TQQQ is historically better than soxl, however, and has a better risk profile than FNGU if you don't think the FNGU is a lasting trend or if you think it's bubbling and will pop. SPXL is even safer than TQQQ, but the upside is nowhere near as good.

There is an issue though, due to lack of immunity we have a big gasoline soaked problem with a lit match still present.

If the disease is not eradicated or a vaccine is not produced, we cannot return to our previous lifestyle of crowds without masks. Yes we "flattened the curve" to prevent exceeding medical capacity. We also considerably elongated the duration of the virus. we have also "elongated the curve" which is a serious issue. Who is going to put up living like this for X amount of years?

A complete return to normal right now wold result in a spike beyond medical capacity. So the problem is not gone, it's just in a dormant crab stats.

Very Nice, like the sun. i think this is a good market, a very good market, one that has a lot of good things going for it. one would be remiss to not take advantage of it, as this is an eternally good market that shall never sour. i would like to thank all those who have participated or are currently participating in this market as you are the real winners and the ones who make it possible. with out you things would only be trading at two or three times their value. one day i hope i'm able to enter this market, but sadly, i have only but a couple pennies and cannot trade. such misfortune. woe is me. some would speak ill of this market, how rude and boorish of them. this market is like a well-tuned machine. all is where it should be. as we have very smart people working on it who know what they're doing. this market will persist for all time, never fading, never stopping, may those who stand in its way tremble at the awesome might with which it grows and expands. never to confront reality, this market shall move unto the future, unimpaired by that which has constrained its predecessors. this market has no need for anything tangible or concrete. hope and and dreams are its bedrock. a most formidable bedrock indeed.

I actually think AMD is currently fairly valued. They produce both CPUs and GPUs, they are currently winning hard on the CPU side, due to security concerns and 7nm+ dominance they've secured the upper hand for at least 10 years in my estimation. On the GPU front, they're doing OK with a couple good moves in the near past such as opensourcing their drivers. However nvidia used the microsoft playbook to corner the market on some important segments like ML research and production, greatly reducing AMD's potential. Regardless they still have an important market segment in the videogame sphere. That makes them strictly superior to intel at the moment. Their fundamentals will reflect their stock price in a few years, and the stock price right now is a bit too forward-looking though.

True. This is going to last for sure. Also I think AMD has no good response yet for the low-power consumer devices arena (e.g. those that can't do ARM) so intel is king there.
Also, in my opinion, intel can only go up from where it is right now. It will take time but they'll definitely manage to eventually reach technology parity with AMD (re 7nm+), and they have the better scientists overall so unless AMD becomes more able to recruit talent, they'll be overcome again.

Leveraged stuff uses decaying assets which don't track well through turbulent markets, with the result that crab runs tank their value relative to the thing they mean to track due to all the quick switching that it can't keep up with. Since we're in the Year of the Golden Crab, it's not the way right now.
P.S. If you want something which approximates between a 2x and 4x leverage of oil markets, SSL seems to be the one right now, and it doesn't have asset decay and is actually undervalue long-term too!
I don't know what the hardware equivalent would be.

Leverage works on the way up and way down. If it crashes, the drawdown is significant which is too much risk for most people.
Given current volatility levels some see 3x ETFs as a timebomb but it's really just a high risk high reward play that's best to swing for a day or two on spikes.
The only leveraged ETFs to absolutely never hold long term are inverses and commodities because they decay like all hell.

No I get that, but why? You also lose money if things go well for you. Your net profit for hedging is 0 unless you time the market twice over, which would mean you then need a hedge for your hedge to be safe.
Why do it at all if you're leaving the money in anyways? And if you're not leaving the money in to begin with, why NOT close part of a long-term position to risk less? You get the same money either way. I just don't see the point.

What are the downsides to opening otm puts and otm calls of the same stock and expiration date? I distribute the same amount of money to both positions, one of them is bound to skyrocket right ? Of course it can go sideways but I don't see that happening often seeing how volatile the market is at its current state. Either way ill gain more money on one position and naturally I'd lose money on the other, but if they're long dated I can make money on both. Anything wrong with this strategy?

I'm not assuming anything at all about the quantity of your hedge, a hedge is just a hedge. But it seems like you are doing it as a time the market thing, in that case the question is why focus on puts/hedging rather than just do ambivalent day trading with that same cash, since you're not selling your long term stuff anyways? What's special about hedging? It gets mentioned on /biz/ a lot but I don't see why.

>> No.19739390

Yes, but DCA slowly into it, especially if you think a second bottom is possible.
>People seem to say not to buy-and-hold leveraged ETFs though; why is that bad?
Mostly misconceptions. People who advise against it say that because they are rebalanced daily, if you start at $1000 and lose 5% on the unleveraged on day 1, you will then lose 15% due to your 3x leverage. On the next day, if the unleveraged gains 3%, it'll be worth $978.5 whereas your leveraged position will gain 9% and be worth $926.5. That's a loss of 21.5 vs 73.5. Clearly 21.5 x 3 is 64.5 which is less than 73.5. This is due to compounding.
However what those people don't ever talk about is that stocks go up more often than down, hence you compound POSITIVELY and not negatively in practice, hence you make a LOT more than 3x the GAINS.
Don't take my words for it, check the historical data yourself. Leveraged ETFs absolutely do not decay and track really well even long-term.
However, never, ever touch an inverse ETF. They inverse jackshit. Just short instead.

SSO (DBPG for euroanons) is a 2x leveraged ETF based on the S&P 500 and it is one of the few leveraged ETFs that existed before the Great Financial Crisis of 2008. Had you bought SSO (DBPG) at the literal top of the market before the recession in October 2007, as of this moment, you would have gains of 176%. Had you bought the underlying SPY on the same day you would have gains of 98%. So had you bought the leveraged ETF, even at the worst possible time, you still would have ended up with almost double the gains.
Remember this the next time somebody throws shade on leveraged ETFs because of volatility decay. Buy the index based leveraged ETFs and win. Simple as that. And start buying now. Coronavirus could be as bad as the GFC and if you start buying in now with a little money and buy in more later as the prices drop you will still come out much better in the long run than buying SPY or worse doing nothing at all.

I hate trimble. We use their Vulcan program for our factory and the software is riddled with bugs. We upgraded to the 2019 version and we couldn't put turning vanes in one of our fittings any more. We complained and we were told over and over they would fix it shortly. We waited months and eventually just reverted to the 2017 version, even though it has less features. They completely suck.

Nobody gives a shit, we're trading stocks here, go an hero in whichever irrelevant way you please and take anyone you like with you, so long as you don't do it in a way that affects my personal holdings.

But that confirms that the prices are real! Bullish!!

>>19739568
At these prices? I’d say picking up some MRK is a personal favorite of mine. I added to my position today and also bought a divvy champion LMT.

If they dip, I’d also keep an eye on CL, PEP, KO, and especially JNJ.

Also bullish on semis and very curious about AVGO. Not a market darling, but that Nokia news is promising and I didn’t even realize they had a 4% yield. I will be watching them for a nice dip!

Buy slowly, dividends are only your frens when they’re attached to fantastic stocks. The market could go in any direction from here.

Oh I also like Lilly but the market seems to hate it now so I’m not sure about it anymore.
