Average down is literally the most persistent bad idea in all of investing. Scientifically, empirically, mathematically, you name it. It is always better to "average up" than average down
Because the only way average down would work is if you knew how far "down" there was to go. That is timing the market with bagholding steps in between.

Yes. You don't immediately start buying when you see 1 green day but its far easier to conclude that the valley you passed 3 weeks ago was "the dip" rather than be falling into it and saying "3 weeks from now it WILL end".
It also protects you if the market doesn't go back up to anywhere near where it started falling.
"DCA" is a big meme because even buying at random times will do better, but average up is still better than average down.

>The phenomenon has caught the attention of more Wall Street experts, who are split on whether or not this ‘Robinhood’ class of investors is fueling the rally. Two main points:
1. You are "averaging up" on winners.
2. The problem with any DCA meme strat is that it always becomes "how much, at what time, by what time". And it doesn't matter if it is time or memesistance "levels". On the way down, you are weighted near the top of the dip and if the market swings back you will likely have either run out of money or now have extra cash in hand because you predicted much longer. This means you start averaging up by force anyway but you were weighted near the previous top anyway.
Meanwhile if you average up, your cost basis is already lower and, in addition, if the market again turns down (the opposite issue from average down), you are sitting mostly in cash, which is PRECISELY what you want to have happen.

but what if it reverses all the way back to your original position price? the best way to go is still to take a full position (or maybe a half position) with a pre-defined risk:reward based on volatility, and then scale out. capital preservation should still ultimately be the #1 goal, profiting comes 2nd. at least with trend trading, you want to have a bunch of small wins and losses which more or less cancel each other out, while you make the big bucks from the legit trends that come around.

I'm gonna sell some nice puts on some 3x leveraged etf (not sure yet if I want FNGU, SOXL, TECL, TAWK, TQQQ or a combination but definitely something in these sectors) as a way to dca down. If the price movement allows I'll sell 75%+ of the assignment if it happens and keep going. Since FNGU is already at ath and basically didn't see a real crash, perhaps SOXL is better. Some of (T)QQQ's exposures are just really retarded currently, but that could hedge against a sector bubble pop, but the tech giants are so massive they are untouchable by the law, and nobody is legally allowed to compete against them, so I don't see that happening.

Farming is stupidly easy. I have no idea why people including you spout that meme that it's hard, I've seen a group of people keep repeating that shit mindlessly and claiming anyone who says otherwise has never grown anything, when clearly it's the exact opposite.
Olive trees bear fruits (that's what matters, not their growth) relatively quickly (some as early as 3 years after planting). Moreover you will usually buy mature, or near-mature trees (i.e. 2-3 years old) instead of seedlings if you want to get started quick. Thus the point becomes moot.

In this theory it's because you don't know where the bottom is so it's better to buy a little bit higher than the bottom on the way up than it is to buy a little bit higher on the way down.
The problem is you don't really know where the bottom is. So instead just follow this advice from Howard Marks

>"So it's my view that waiting for the bottom is folly. What, then, should be the investor's criteria? The answer's simple: if something's cheap – based on the relationship between price and intrinsic value – you should buy, and if it cheapens further, you should buy more."
