Where do people do those portfolio-builders that you can track the historical growth for? I am a long-term buy-and-hold kind of guy; my current portfolio is a mix of KO, FRT, and PM for dividends. I also have a more risky one focused on REITs like NYMT, NRZ, and MPLX. MO returns about 8% currently. They just hit dividend king and would sooner liquidate the company than drop that dividend. They're in tobacco, which is a bit of a worry, but have had good success in transitioning with IQOS. It's a long road though, but they have the history to back it up.

Here's my take

Corporate debt was exploding and GDP growth was weak for the last few years
You start to see things like auto loan delinquency rising
Repo market collapse in sep 2019
By dec 2019 the fed was injecting sometimes over a billion a day to prop up short term credit markets
People start calling stocks a bubble in jan-feb, expecting a correction
GDP drops in feb when recession began

Up until this point according to the politicians corona was a hoax, no need to lock down, etc.

Then stocks dropped late feb / early march with the liquidity crisis. Biggest crash in history.

Only AFTER the crash did all of a sudden the politicians say we need lockdowns. Now we need trillions of stimulus. And its all because of corona and the lock downs. Which weren't even in the cards until all the other shit already went down.

IMO this is classic financial crisis, run of the mill over leveraging by companies, irresponsible risk taking by companies, to achieve ever increasing growth even when the underlying economy was very weak and not growing. And corona was a god send for the politicians to blame as a scapegoat and to have cover to support blowing the fuck out of the national debt which they bitched and fear mongered about for 10 years straight.

The politicians were able to perfectly craft the "recovery" narrative to pump stocks back to all time highs for a second chance to cash out. And over the last few months net worth of the richest people have actually increased. Typical economic crash, the established economic nobility class gets bailed out on the public's dime, and none of the masses are the wiser because they have the "invisible enemy" to blame instead.

You can see the number of holders for any given stock have increased significantly. A far more interesting graph would be one where there is a disproportionate increase, relative to the increase as a whole.

Theres much better opportunities in less efficient markets. Even real estate, you can make >50% a year rather safely if you can string together the right deals, but don't expect to do this to scale, otherwise you'll be competing with big money.

Of course you can exploit the largest opportunities by starting a business. For example, my father never took a business loan and turned $3K in starting capital into a business that does 2M in revenue and makes 400K+/year, and he works like maybe 15 hours a week these days. That's much less common when you're dealing with billion dollar companies. Competition is your biggest enemy in business.
