There hasn't been an erc-20 token that holds the value of bitcoin in a decentralized, trustless way. Ren can be a custodian for any blockchain. When bitcoin is deposited into Ren they use shamir secrets to spread the key across all of the darknodes. the Ren erc-20 token is used as a bond among darknodes. Bad behavior slashes this bond. you need 100k Ren to run a dark node. Dark nodes collect fees for minting and burning renBTC, renZEC, and renBCH
