When a stock is in an uptrend, the trail loss stop "trails" the price, so that it the stock suddenly changes to a downtrend, and it falls below a set %, you will only lose from that uptrend price.

You only use these once you're in a great position (profit) and you want to just see how high the stock will go. These orders are only available in intraday trading, and you cannot use them in pre-market or after-hours.
