why using an erc20 token if you need eth as gas anyway?
can anyone come up with a usecase for erc20 where using eth doesnt make sense?

There are several benefits to projects having their own token on Ethereum apart from using Ethereum itself:

* Contracts on the EVM can add features not inherent in Ethereum itself such as staking, mining, deflation, privacy
* ERC20's allow platforms to have their own economic ecosystem E.g. exchange token trading rewards
* ERC20's allow assets like USD, stocks, commodities, property etc. to be tokenized and traded on Ethereum
* Business points reward systems like frequent flyer miles
