Two rules of car buying:

(1) If a car dealership isn't making at least $1k on a sale, they ain't doing it. Everybody who lies and said he talked the Honda dealership into selling him a new civic for some pocket lint is full of shit. Don't overplay your hand.

(2) Go to / Email every dealership in your area and ask for the lowest no-nonsense cash price for the car you want. Say you are making a decision in a week. See who sends you the lowest quote, and follow up about no-nonsense. Ask him to SEND you the paperwork confirming this price before you even go down there. Saves you a shit ton of time and prevents all the Fargo "let me speak to my manager" bullshit stalling tactic. Its amazing how much lower they go if you do this via email / phone.

1. Take $5000, and buy a Honda Civic with the lowest miles you can find.

i have one of these trucks they're pretty good.
-The engine is fundamentally just highly developed old tech, which is fine since old tech works fine.
-The injection system is good.
-fuel mileage is not great-- its a heavy and non-aerodynamic shape.
-very practical. the access-cab is the one to get for sure, driving with 3+ people is rare, and its possible to do but day-to-day the reverse-hinged rear door makes getting at stuff behind the driver's seat very natural and convenient.
-It's capable off-road. If you get stranded its not the trucks fault. You can add more terrain-specific tires and give'r. The TRD Pro model comes with a host of shiny cool suspension and chassis components, and the nicer-looking "TOYOTA" Grille.
-Despite being a modern vehicle its easy to work on and maintain if you're mechanically inclined. this increases a vehicle's lifetime near-indefinitely.
-Drives like shit: It's a truck
