She did wrong by lying to investors about the product existing at all. It's not like she was openly admitting to still developing. She was sending the samples off to traditional testers, the kinds she was claiming to be replacing, and claiming the results as her own. So all of the money couldn't have been going to R&D, some of it clearly went to pay labs to do her work. Which is at best money towards marketing.

These scams are way more complicated than you're implying. You embezzle the money by paying fraudulent invoices to shell companies. How do you know she didn't steal that R&D money?
