You can listen to the songs you've already added to your library, but they have removed the ability to discover new music of your choosing, which is kind of what you're paying for. If you're only listening to music in your library, that defeats the purpose of the streaming service and you'd be better just buying your songs from the itunes store or pirating everything.

it's because the global conglomerate evolved. artists get paid per listening which is far more fair than selling CDs. everyone gets music at a cheap price (what, you pay like $120 PER year on music at all, and can go with $0 and ads if that's too much for you) AND can support the artists they actually listen to. the software also makes use of the data your listening provides it with that lets you discover indie/less popular artists that make music you would specifically love but would never ever get to listen to if you had to search for them.

IF spotify also pulls an apple and forces the marketing team's political ideologies on you, torrenting, or whatever alternative smart contracts replace it with, will be back very fast. the whole reason they became standard back then was that the music industry became nonscencial. but for now it learned from the mistake and is being far more sensible than in the past.

most people part of the apple cult are used to not having freedom so it's not that surprising/upsetting to them, and most of them wouldn't be torrenting even if they had to pay $60 for every single hit in their library.
