With my MSc in math I do quant finance at a large bank, but I think I would rather do freelance or work at a smaller fund. The bureaucracy and corporate culture is completely creativity stifling. So I'm with you OP

PhDs actually can make quite good money if they go into HFT or something, although it'd mostly be in the bonus, not the salary.
