This is unironically the most important thing to know about trading. Guard against losses FAR more than you pursue gains.

This rustles my nuts SO hard. I once spent half an hour trying to explain this to a co-worker (40+ male, who according to himself knows everyone and is an expert in everything) with several fucking examples written on a paper. And all I got was "no, but you have to remember we're talking about PERCENTS not about numerical amounts" and "if you take 10% it's 90%, and when you add 10% to that it's 100%". That was like 5-6 years ago, and my brain still hurts when thinkin about it. So thank you, OP, for triggering my PTSD.

That was the first thing tried. And it was "but we are NOT talking about numbers, we're talking about percents". You know that spongebob meme with patrick and man ray and patricks wallet? It was like that. EXACTLY like that.

It's not just a mathematical issue.

If you lose 10% of your starting value and then gain 10% of that same starting value there is no loss (ceteris paribus, spread et cetera priced in).

The OP doesn't state that the later 10% gain is a percentage of the later -10% value. For me, most likely he (internet girl) means he lost 10% of his value and afterwards gained that same 10% value, derived from the original 100% value. This makes most sense to me because you would always calculate from your original input. That value is your value at stake. If you take your 10% loss and call the new value your calculation value you are essentially 'buy-high-sell-low' minded. You accept your -10% defeat and calling your new value your starting point. And I am just not tempted to regard the OP from that point of view. But if you do and you get your calculator out, it says more about your MO than OPs post.
