they sort of explained it but briefly and its hard to decipher without prior knowledge. basically firms use VaR models that are actually decent at gauging risk exposure but only if you use the correct distribution assumptions for volatility. volatility is never normally distributed in reality and has fat tails so if you use an inaccurate distributoin like that, your VaR is way lower than it seems. its likely the guy who got fired used a better, more complicated distribution to model it and the 95 VaR now showed they were exposed to more than all of the firms assets and even at lower confidence levels so one bad swing would crush them
