Sometimes it's just dumb reasons. I have a Fidelity brokerage account because my HSA is also there, a Vanguard account because my old 401(k) was there, and Etrade account because an old employee stock purchase program was there...unless you go around cleaning up and closing accounts you just accumulate stragglers over time.

I use one to trade in a Roth IRA for tax free capital gains. The money is more or less stuck until I'm 59.5 and I use another one as a more liquid account. The cool thing is that you can withdraw.anything you originally transferred in, so If you transfer in 10k and turn it to 100k you can still take out the 10k and leave the 90k in without it getting taxed.

One is with Fidelity and the other is with Ally but I'll probably be opening another (or moving money from ally) over to TD Ameritrade because their thinkorswim platform seems way better.
