The second order economic impacts of high unemployment are important. It could have far reaching influences on defaults, consumer spending habits, including discretionary spending, foreclosures, etc. This will all trickle up to listed companies that rely on these revenue streams. That is something that no amount of monetary or fiscal stimulus can fix in an organic and healthy way for companies and consumers or the national debt. Also, these are all common events that unfold over a year or two in recessions. Markets occasionally get disconnected from economic effects, but even a forward looking discounting mechanism will have to adjust valuations when the underlying economics begin to lower forward earnings potential significantly, which is exactly why so many companies have suspended forward guidance for the year. That is not optimistic. Don't get meme'd by the "priced in" shite. It's always "priced in" until it isn't.

Say you invest 10k
Dividend stock pays 5% a year and goes up 3% will mean you have 10k + 500 + 300 = 10800.
Growth stock pays 0% a year and grows 8% will mean you have 10k + 800 = 10800.
The main difference is risk, but each employs different opportunists and advantages. Generally stocks that have dividends do not grow or fall and pay out regularly, while growth stocks may move significantly up or down.

Of course. Time in the market is true. But, if you bought at the top of the Dot Com bubble, you would have had to wait until the very peak of the GFC to break even. If you bought at the peak of the GFC, you would have to wait for half a decade to break even. Even if you bought on the retracement in early May of 2008, you would have to wait four years to break even. DCA is fine in less volatile markets, and okay if you can't be fucked to look at the market every day. But we're on /biz/ and we can be fucked to look at the markets every day. There's too much uncertainty and short/medium term macroeconomic stress to justify buying in right now at 295. March was good, but now is not unless you're picking up a very battered sector or stock that is only oversold on technicals but has strong long term fundamentals. Everyone has their own risk tolerance.

Exactly this. But right now the stock market is pricing is zero risk and zero fundamentals. Not a GDP drop, not bad earnings, not longer unemployments, nothing. Economy will bring the market back to reality very soon. This is the way stock markets work - mostly based on hopium and fear.

only if you bought the Nasdaq. If you bought the DOW or other sectors it wasn't nearly as bad
for the next point you made - again, that only matters if you were blindly buying certain indices. If you were heavy in auto and finance (for example) 2008 was even worse; if you weren't, or if you had any kind of stock/bond situation with re-balancing, it isn't nearly so bad as you said.

There are always opportunities. For your gravity analogy, it would be something like thermodynamics. If you look at the S&P in a one-dimensional way, you can find simple answers. But if you broaden your horizons, you can find better answers. :D

Lower volatility from the company typically being basically unable to achieve a loss (although at the same time unable to grow formally, profit increases year on year "automatically" true "forces of nature" such as population increase in the case of utility companies), while pressure is maintained due to the dividend payed having no inherent relation to the stock price, thus the stock being increasingly attractive and thus attracting more buyers, thus stabilizing the price, whenever it ever falters. You're never achieving 50% returns on growth stocks (except in pennyland, for example), and especially not risk-free. So if a dividend stock would go so low as to provide such a payout, everyone would jump on it, increasing price, fixing the issue.

no you should either spend it all on something like $SPY, or invest in long term rebound companies. MRO or KOS could be good, there are a few good oil companies that are likely to keep rising, you could go even longer term with food/airlines/cruises/banks but those could take potentially years to recover.
safest would be something like $SPY because it tracks the entire index, which is going up all the time

Realistically how long until the bull trap ends and the market comes back down to earth? How long can/will the Fed give out stimulus loans to keep the market afloat while companies rearrange their holdings and future plans?

There's talk of another stimulus package but is this decoupled from the loans the Fed/Blackrock are handing out?

What is opportunity cost. Buying in right now at 295 has more downside risk exposure than upside return potential in the short term, which could substantially limit longer term returns if we see extended downside, as we have in every other recession of the same magnitude. For /biz/raelis, watching the markets everyday and managing risk appropriately based on market and macroeconomic conditions shouldn't be hard to do. Your potential return on your capital is much higher if you bought in at March. Likewise, now, when there's more risk at our current price levels, it's simply less risky to wait a month or two to go in with whatever remaining dry powder you've got after we have more market and economic clarity.

>>19256679
I completely agree that sector allocation, index tracking, and individual stock picking can result in very different results. The indices are very top heavy right now, and there are ton of battered sectors and individual stocks that typically get overlooked in markets like this. It's a great opportunity for individual stock pickers and bargain hunters as opposed to index matching "passive investors." But, that's the majority of your retail investor these days. Similarly, funds that attempt to minimize risk and still meet minimum returns in the current market (e.g., pensions) are buoying indices right now, along with defensive tech and healthcare picks. If, for any reason, that mini-bubble gets popped, there will be market-wide effects. If you're DCA'ing into selected stocks with strong fundamentals that are beaten down only on a technical level, it's probably irrelevant long term, since their downside potential is less. But for the percentage of your portfolio allocated to index matching, the substantial uncertainty elevates risk for buying in right now, at 295. More incentive to go bargain hunting.

indefinitely, but wether the credit is actually extended to corps in trouble (and creditworthy corps) is a completely different question
>There's talk of another stimulus package but is this decoupled from the loans the Fed/Blackrock are handing out?
They're not really together. FED/Blackcock are concerned with credit markets and preventing panic - the fursthest away they have gone is in extending loans to municipalities that are going bankrupt. Fiscal policies are probably going to be more focused on public works and the state and local government regulations. These gov entities have specific requirements for their balance sheets but have little to no ways to generate revenue. We might see a cares extension or a payroll tax moratorium. I have doubts on the latter. It's fucking horse shit. Trump better imprison whoever is standing in the way of that and promoting more faggot cares.

>I'm not sure the Fed or Blackrock cares about the ability to pay back the loans
The FED and Blackcock are interested in credit markets, but not if anyone can pay. They are there to ensure that people can buy, sell, extend, and obtain debt/credit. Additionally we do need to consider the overwhelming demand for dollars abroad and the unemployment situation that we're in. So the fed is working on the deflationary pressures right now as well - this is something that both sets of policymakers are working on together.
>mostly worried about certain companies getting massive amounts of loans they will default on purposely and stick the taxpayer with paying off
it will likely happen intentionally or unintentionally. Hopefully we see a bunch of chapter 11. The loan underwriters (banks) likely have incentives to give loans to businesses that have leverage over them (we saw this with PPP).

>>19257322
>im staying the hell away from tankers
Only reason i mention tankers is that they should get a bump if US Shale is put under stress. Additionally if there are tariffs on oil passed by US government, OXY should see a nice pump while tankers might take a hit from it. Set buy date to 2008-02-"01" and end date to 2020-02-"01"
>why
2008 simulates the conditions where return on capital are maximized (i.e you buy the stock when it's beaten down and reaches 30% yields), and where a recovery follows.
It also excludes the current crash because the effect is entailed in the aftermath of the 2008 events, and not all stocks are temporarily (important) affected the same during the crash.

Both dotcom and tech bursts were over the span of years which would likely result in true garbage being delisted in the mean time and actual tech companies or merit like MSFT staying around. Overnight sudden pops are limited by circuit breakers. Just sell it all if that happens since the whole market is probably crashing since its led along by tech anyway. Rebuy if it was temporary.
Just BUY THE FUCKING TQQQ

I got the Johnny Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare. Poured my self a nice glass to celebrate a great day on the trading front. Cheers to all you who dumped your gold, and cheers to Jeff Bezos for making his companies stock price high enough for my puts. Also, cheers to the Anon that I gave the beer to.

Going all in on anything is a bad idea unless you're a poorfag and don't have a choice. Staying in the game is more important than getting rich quick, and you stay in the game by being diversified, I personally don't put more than 10% into anything no matter how sure I am of the outcome because you just never know.

You may get lucky going all in a few times but it will catch up to you eventually and when it does your account will get blown up.

I would personally take the winnings or half of the winnings and use them to gamble if you want to feel invested and learn to be a degenerate trader. the rest i would sit on in cash until we clear upwards or downwards.
