So as a validator, you stake other peoples coins (or yours) and charge commission. You would host this yourself with a high availability solution. Most people won't do this.

As a nominator, you bond your coins and then nominate 16 validators. KSM will automatically pick the most profitable and safe validator for you. All you do is:

1. Bond you coins for staking
2. Nominate the validator you would like to stake with or it will choose the best ones for you
3. Sit back and start receiving your payouts (you have to claim it every 21 days, or you get them when another nominator that is staking along side with you hits payout)

You wont need to stake if you don't want to. Your coins will be bonded for 7 days. About 60% of the network is staking right now and have bonded their coins.

The remaining coins are used for parachain deployments. Look into that, you know what an ICO is right? Look into how the parachain rewards people investors, in some cases, you get your coins back.

It's really fucking cool shit and you don't need to stake if you don't feel comfortable doing it (or stake some?).

This is a low mc with a majority of the network locking their coins into KSM because they believe in the tech and will be rewarded greatly for it.
