Does anyone else cringe and feel so sorry for themselves when looking back at their past selves?

My first real full time job ever after university was at the start of 2017 even though I'm almost 30. I currently work at the same company but around 1 or 1.5 ranks higher, something like that.

I'd have to give away too much information about myself if I gave too much detail but I feel so sorry for myself when thinking back. I had little awareness of the workplace, such as who did what. I was low status, kind of in the no hoper's position. I was eventually given almost no work yet my contract was renewed.

I'm in a much better job now, with lots more responsibility and work, working regularly with more senior employees and people from other companies etc. But there was something so cringey about me then because I didn't quite realise how low status I was.

I work for my dad and feel the same way. I'm beginning to think that the bar for office work is a lot lower than you might expect if you come from a labor position where you're actually working all day. As long as you get your work done and introduce efficiencies for more important contributors, you should be doing alright.

Anyone 5+ years older than you forgives you for whatever you're "cringing" about and recognizes that you were just a young guy. Especially men will just recognize, well that guys an idiot but he's young. I'm only a tad older than you (32... or is it 33?)...It really doesn't matter dude, just get on with life.

No. I'm also in my late 20s and only a year or two into the workforce, bottom rung, I get paid 40hrs a week to do scientific research which I do for around 20hrs of my time. No responsibility, flexible deadlines. I'm basically not even an employee, I'm an investment, the hope is that in a few years I'll be a competent researcher. Feels good. It's pathetic that you care so much about being in the "low status" position at work, and even more pathetic that the split second you get out of it you immediately shit on it as "cringey" when realistically you're still right near the bottom of the ladder. Reels of cope.
