The easiest way to have the same results but not depend on chipping is a self governed Digital Identity tied to your phone number/smartphone that you already have in your pocket.
Combined with CCTV, 5G and other tracking technology it is very efficient.

Not too long ago they did a concept of the grocery store of the future, you log in with your app on your phone, you can enter take what you want and through many sensors and your app you pay automatically for the items when you walk out.
The same principle will apply to every store and business so without a smartphone you will be fucked eventually.
