How? Most of the welders I know make a lot of money. You might benefit from being creative and setting out on your own. Open your own business or something. If you're really good at working with metals, maybe you could make art and sell it to yuppies on the internet. Maybe you could learn other forms of metalworking like historical blacksmithing and start a Youtube channel about it, like Townsends except for historical metalworking. Be creative. You're young, you have a real tangible skill which sets you apart from 90% of zoomers. We live in the age of the internet, where contacting people far away to sell them things or entertain them is easier than it's ever been.

I make around $47k before OT, bonuses, other perks. Working for a non-profit has tons of extras so my low pay is understandable. I have better health insurance than any government worker fully paid for by my company for my whole family, performance wage increases and bonuses, far too much time off, can flex my schedule as I need, and I still max out my 403(b) and contribute at least $500 a month to my taxable investments. My wife averages about $120k a year in a medical setting with little flex, little to no benefits, and little time off. Shit market for nurses around here. Together we have 2 kids, a house we bought for $54k that I gutted and am probably going to get about $168k for provided the housing market doesn't completely fall out from under us. Oh well, house is paid for and we live well on roughly $40k a year. Definitely struggling since I personally make less than "the average American".

Its all union so they don’t really get much of a say when they work or not
They are all poor as fuck and my uncle is physically broken by the labour so now he gets even fewer contracts despite having a full family to feed

To me it doesn't seem like good work, and I come from the sort of background where everyone became tradies/farmers/labourers of some sort
