https://www.investing.com/analysis/commodities-week-ahead-oil-storage-rears-ugly-head-again-gold-tiptoes-on-china-200524216

>That proves that the “contango play” in oil—where the discount in crude’s front-month versus the nearest contract makes the commodity worth for storing—could be revived, Gibson suggested.

WTI’s front-month June contract was at a discount of less than $1.30 to July WTI while its London-traded peer, July Brent was less than $1.10 to its August contract. The WTI contango was about 20 times larger less than three weeks back when U.S. crude fell to its first-ever negative pricing toward the expiry of its then May front-month.

While another fate like that might not befall the current front-month, the growing storage for U.S. crude is beginning to spook some in the market.

Reasons tanker stocks are crashing to bankruptcy

Try to stay focused on the fundamentals people (because I put the fun in fundamental get it?

1. Contango almost gone
2. Daily rates crashing to all time lows
3. Dumb money has already left and wont be back
4. Tanklets dont understand dividends
5. Tanklets dont understand that stocks value are based on future earnings
6. Brandon told them much of this and they didn't listen and already lost money; now mad at all Brandons
7.No catalyst for rising stock price
8. 2nd qtr earnings not good
9. 3rd qtr and beyond losses as far as you can see
10. Excess ships will be scrapped setting stage for a weak recovery in 2027
11. When the board bagholders capitulate we will get a 30% bounce
12. Then down to zero on bankruptcy by June 2021

None of this is reputable

Still not convinced? Well lets start looking at the NIKKEI then for any similarities.

Chart 4 shows the Nikkei during 06-08. Again, we're seeing danger in the months immediately after May. Obviously it crashed with the SPX but interestingly enough there had been an earlier pattern.

Okay let's look at our current SP500 pattern again... Pulled from wsb: Potential head and shoulders forming?

But are there any catalysts for a market downturn? Personally I think as America is starting to open up again liberals have switched the narrative from flattening the curve to preventing ALL deaths. They've set themselves up to win big against Trump by pointing to the massive amounts of people who're about to get Covid again from reopening to die, but to set up this narrative they've planted the mentality that peak deaths have ended, and peak infections have ended. A lot of people are going to be shocked by the infections in the coming months to the delight of the Democratic party (WHO CONTROL THE MEDIA). This could be our catalyst, along with...

DHT is save because they have a large part of their fleet on lease for 100k a day. This is above the current rate (well depending on the day) and might cost them income in the future when rates rise, it does make it a lot safer and near future proof. The rate they get is still superior to normal conditions by about 3x. And the other part of the fleet can run on the spot market where they need to earn more than 2.500 a day to break even. Which is obviously absurdly low even in normal times.

I am also considering taking it as a long term hold because I really started to like the company and it is fuck around money anyway. Might even add to it. So the low divvy is not a problem if it means they expand their business or pay their debt. Which they are doing right now.

[a catalyst for market rollover includes spike in infections and deaths, along with] ... Bankruptcy, and insolvency, which are on on the rise. We're just beginning to see the first string of them happening:

>Stage Stores (Goody's, Palais Royal, Bealls, Peebles, and Gordmans): http://corporate.stage.com/press-releases

Remember that bankruptcy is a lagging indicator and happens months down the road from the trigger. Check out this google trends.

Here's an overall summary:

May June July August are HIGH DANGER months during economic downturns. Anyone holding stocks during this point in time needs to understand their own timeframe and strategy, and if you're holding out for divvies you're likely going to see big pullbacks. If you're holding out only for oil to fill up storage, predicting a pump, be ready to sell when you're up big and get out. There is no room for greed, be extremely careful. Be extremely vigilant.

However, I could be wrong completely, so watch for the SP500 to break out of this recent pattern, which would really mean "stocks only go up." If SP500 breaks through 300, then holy shit. That'd still be extremely bullish for tankers too; the on the ground oil situation, if you're inclined to believe it, is still fucked, and we'd be sailing with the wave the SP500 is riding.

My strategy: Sell in late may with oil storage news hitting. Buy back in in November when there's blood on the streets for the potential 2021 supercycle.

Be careful /tankerbros/ a storm's coming. Thanks for reading.

I would just hold for the dividend, I don't see the prices fluctuating so much lower to make the exposure now significantly different to the exposure in November. I'm feeling that either the whole play is crushed in the next two quarters or it takes the fuck off and doesn't stop. I have no evidence, it's just my gut feeling.

Lol I'm taking losses on holdings I had in April. My holdings from March are barely above water. FROM MARCH kek. March traded way below the bottom on the "bust" in the industry in 2018.

Weirdly enough, the price falling this low gives me the most confidence I have ever had that I made the right move. I work in Long Beach and can literally look out my window and see these tankers chilling off of the coast. Can't shake me from what my own eyes can see.

Waiting for the 19th, gonna have quite the sensible chuckle. Supply still outstrips demand. US Shale is apparently going to go in Texans' swimming pools because Texas gonna Texas. You can do all the fancy handwaving you want about the future, but I believe in what people DO, not what they SAY, and Texans have shown us exactly where they believe this shit is actually headed: we're desperately looking for more storage.

WTI goes in random caves and fucking OPEN PITS lol (I still can't quite believe that's where we are). Brent goes in tankers. There are no other options anymore. Everybody in the tanker industry is holding off on retrofits/scrubbers. Everybody in the tanker industry is holding off on scrapping. Everybody in the tanker industry beat earnings projections.

This all points to tankers doing well into the future. You hold your older vessels to play contango, pay down debts, then scrap them later avoid dealing with new environmental regulations, rightsizing to the new shipping market. How this translates into stock price is anyone's guess, but there's no way in hell we stick at March prices long term, unless somebody figured out how to teleport oil overseas.

Probably won't save those 5/15 calls though if anyone bought them. They dead son, you're getting bogged, big money doesn't wanna cover that shit. SHTF the week of the 18th, everybody knows it.

Yeah I'm just hoping this weird hopium rebound causes a massive backlash. The news between April and May have been:
>Supply: omg oil producers agree to record production cuts!
Meanwhile nobody has seen compliance numbers from countries that lie constantly. Even with 100% compliance, they still don't outstrip estimated demand deficit.
>Demand: omg the countries are reopening
Biggest oil consumers are China, India, and the US.
The US certainly is not opening. Everything revolves around schools. If the kids aren't back in school, we aren't open. School lockdowns in Cali just got extended to June, have family in education. Sorry flyovers, you don't matter re oil demand, if metropolitan governors aren't listening, we're not opening.
China certainly is not open. Chink lies are what got us in this mess in the first place. All you have to do is lurk /k/ for a few days to understand this. WHO was absolutely foolhardy to rely on their numbers in their February coronavirus report
Pooland certainly is not open. Modi just spoke about a phased release of lockdown IF he doesn't see poor numbers. That won't save an oil glut over the next few months.

Meanwhile Trump twitter pumps oil right before the fall. I don't know how many times people will fall for the exact same pattern before they get wise and we start seeing prices settle at proper levels.

>How this translates into stock price is anyone's guess

You need buyers and sellers for the stock price to move. You are obviously convinced of the fundamentals, as are most institutional investors. Right now the average institutional holdings of all tankerstocks is right at 50%. You will see the stock price move down during the retail shakeout (assisted by media FUD), then back up during the hype phase. At that point it will be too late to get in, and the right time to sell.

So did anyone else go into SCO like I did?
I bought some SCO like 10 minutes after market open, it opened at 36.25, rose about .50, dropped back down to 36.25, then it's just been going up since.
It was a good thing I did because it evened out my tanker losses and now the tankers are slowly crawling back up so it's pure profit.

>Assuming the buildup will continue at the latest rate of roughly 15 million barrels per week,[xiv] the United States would hit 100 percent storage capacity sometime in August 2020, with some parts of the country reaching full capacity much earlier. In Cushing, assuming a buildup of 5 million barrels a week, 100 percent capacity would be reached by mid-May 2020. Operational constraints, however, suggest storage could become effectively full well before capacity reaches 100 percent; some must remain available for receiving new deliveries, tank-to-tank transfers, blending, and other routine operations.

>There may be some extra storage cushion available to the market through offshore storage in floating tankers and if the U.S. government increases its strategic petroleum reserves. The IEA estimates that the global amount of oil being stored on vessels at sea rose 27 percent to 103.1 million barrels in March 2020, adding that there may be “a significant increase in floating storage in the coming few months as oil surpluses mount.”[xvi] Furthermore, the U.S. government’s strategic petroleum reserve, which held 635 million barrels as of March 27, 2020, has enough capacity to hold another 78.5 million barrels.[xvii] Finally, global production cuts may help ease some pressure on storage capacity. Saudi Arabia and Russia reportedly ended their dispute on April 12, 2020, as part of a production deal in which both countries and the United States will lead a coalition of 23 oil-producing countries to cut output by 9.7 million barrels a day.[xvii Further cuts may follow.

>there may be “a significant increase in floating storage in the coming few months as oil surpluses mount.

Bloomberg rank #31 analyst and #1 Shipping Analyst is posting on WSB.

> Tankers, Major Key Alert, Don't Play Yourselves: Earnings plays never work when everyone is betting on it. Received hundreds of inquiries the past weeks about which stocks would respond best to earnings, also lots of hedge funds shorting deliberately trying to snap the names on earnings.
Oil rally certainly didn't help. Q1-20 was beautiful and Q2-20 guidance was even better. Bulls make money. Bears make money. Pigs get slaughtered.
Investors make money. Traders make money. Gamblers go broke.
I believe the best tanker names will do well over time (hint: not $NAT, it's a weak company trading at super-primo valuations). Oh and I'm a gambling pig myself sometimes, I owned some $STNG $25c on a play, so I'm not perfect. In the words of the great DJ Khalid: "Major Key Alert! .... Don't Play Yourself!"

> just way too many people jammed into calls, smart money was selling the hell out of calls (and puts- but mostly calls to match ratio).
>Owning stocks or calls into an earnings play is fucking dumb, but especially in shipping where the hands are weaker than anything I’ve ever seen.
>Hedge funds deliberately shorted into this knowing retail would panic and dump the second the stocks went red.

I can't believe WSB TankerTwitter, Wallstreet Shipping Experts, /biz/, and degenerate footfags (jk) are having a crossover event united by Tankers, battling it out against hedgies. This is one for the books boys. The Big Port, coming to a theatre near you.

Just got an email from my boss, might be going back to work next week. Can't datapost all day anymore /tankerbros/ but what I CAN do now is go LONG on my tankies. Pigs get slaughtered my friends.

If you're long, hold till late 2020 or late 2021 when Charter and spot rates are down; then all the old Tankers are getting scrapped and we're going to have supply side shock in the Tanker market. Also these companies have been getting battered for a long time, having their own secular bear market for years, and now and have trimmed all fat. All bear markets are caused by bull markets. All bull markets are caused by bear markets. There's no other industry except miners who're in as good of a spot as this. And what do you know, miners are leading the SP500 in 2020, and likely will into late 2021. Our time is coming.
