For those who never studied business or leadership, it's called creating organisational culture.
Investing in the people within the area and making them feel part of the organisation in a social context. It's far beyond just writing down rules, it's about tacit knowledge that people pick up from observing and interacting.
Orientate the staff to be friendly and work as a team with the customers value as their upmost priority and then you drive more traffic into the business and obtain loyal customers.

It also allows you to identify wasters who won't comply, have any ability to work with the businesses strategic goal or understand social aspects of doing their job and you can get rid of them. Any obvious faggots hurting your business (like the people in this thread) are denied positions upon application because everyone at all levels can spot their bad attitude instantly and don't want to be lumbered with picking up their slack.

It happens across all levels of society, whether it's the working-class archaelogy major who decided to get a masters in library science (and rack up a ton of debt) who now works as essentially a receptionist at a private school while her husband is an accountant, to the PhD chemical engineer who works as a postdoc at a university lab making maybe 50k a year because her husband is in IT so she can leave early to pick up the kids from school.
