Also it's important to note we actually can cure a lot of cancers and the body does a remarkable job for the most part in cleaning up cancerous cells. The most deadly cancers tend to be the ones that no one detects until they metastasize to another organ system where the symptoms are more obvious and by that point the philosophy is "it could be anywhere in the body" and we basically brand you as incurable. Our radiation methods have gotten pretty damn sophisticated and chemotherapy is now being combined with immunotherapy (which is increasingly getting more advanced) or in some cases targeted therapy alone is just knocking out a significant amount of cancer cases outright. If our detection methods were better, we'd buy a lot of time until more effective treatments were developed which as you point out, is something that is almost inevitable as we begin to understand the mechanism more thoroughly.

You are right to say that our methods are getting more advanced, but the methods are pretty primitive to begin with if you think about it. We either irradiate, use extremely harmful chemicals, or just plain out remove the affected organ. This is correct. There are a great many things you can use as shielding, but water is straightforward. There are also metals that do the trick in thin foils for the vast majority of radiation frequencies we're worried about.

But the big takeaway is that the total volume of shielding needed to block *le harmful rays* is static. Once they're blocked they're blocked. So as a ship gets bigger it's usable volume increases by it's cube, but necessary shielding surface area increases by it's square.

So yea sending a fighter jet sized spacecraft outside LEO is pretty rude to the astronaut. But anything useful in terms of colonization would be so over-shielded by it's own cargo it's ridiculous.
