Realistically you're better off avoiding the short term trading or day trading.
It's not easy to make money out of it and I'd recommend not having more than 10k in a daytrading account. If you lose it, it's only 10k and if you make money out of it all profits above 10k should be put in long term holds (preferably ones with divvies) or used to pay off the mortgage.
