Young people were already moving out, the chink flu is just accelerating it. On the nyc subreddit they all agree it's not worth it any longer

I use that gay font too. It derailed an eBay thread earlier when I posted a screencap.

NYC is fucked. Not forever, nothing is forever, but they're certainly on the abyss of a slide into 80's-level urban decay.

I left last year, after nine years there. It was completely unlivable when the economy was doing great.

The infrastructure is in bad shape; the subways never recovered from Sandy, and the metro transit (NJT in particular) are wretched. Commuting is nightmarish.

Crime IS low, but that's only because of the most aggressive quasi-military policing in America. De Blasio relaxed policing and there was an immediate resurgence in street crime. There is a large population of people whose co-operation has been purchased with entitlements... they will not do well under austerity. And in general, there was a level of constant hostility and racial animosity in the air when I left that definitely wasn't there when I first moved in.

Homelessness is a huge issue, and unlike every other city, you aren't mostly seeing the homeless from your air-conditioned car, you are sharing subway cars with them and walking a foot away from them in Penn Station.

People are jaded, anxiety-ridden, overmedicated, perpetually underemployed neurotics.

We all know that the fallout from COVID-19 will be a severe drop in tax revenues. This will immediately exacerbate the problems I listed above, plus many more.

But the long-term picture is bleaker. Pandemic fears, the quality of life plunge, and significantly increased tolerance for remote work will result in a flight to the suburbs. Very few people will want to raise their kids in New York in its next iteration.

New York will become, like Detroit, a city made up not of people who want to be there, but people who don't have enough resources to escape.

Grew up there and this is spot on. Many people can't move out because they don't have the money or resources, if another wave of UBI hits and jobs don't come back there will be caravans of Brooklyners heading into the Midwest looking for work.

I'd also add on that the upper middle and upper classes of NYC are particularly shitty. They are extremely old money at this point, and most middle class people are technically millionaires which gives them a huge ego even though they live worse than most small town Americans. They are the grand children of the Gatsby era and they're all pretending to be him while not producing much of value.

The younger people who move there show off as much as possible because attention is the only thing you gain living in Manhattan, most can't save money unless they have family support in the area.
