not commodities lol. You're essentially buying a contract to own that good in the future. You can find lots of funny stories about investors scrambling to store truckloads of grain n shit. Usually people sell the contracts before they actually have to worry about storing the goods, but now no one is buying, and oil is too intrinsically valuable, so you're probably going to hear lots of strange happenings with clever storage solutions (and probably a few catastrophes from improper storage)

Nah. Futures is where people purchase contracts for future deliveries of goods. When the contract expires the person holding it is on the hook for accepting those goods. The contract expires a month before the delivery date, so the oil contracts expiring tomorrow will be delivered in May.

So all the negative prices were from people who have no storage facilities desperately paying people that do at the last minute to accept delivery of the oil. If you were of the swindling persuasion you could snap up several hundred of those contracts at that price, accept payment to the tune of several million dollars, and then cash out and skip town before delivery is attempted.

Yes. You're the financial speculating asshole middleman kike raising prices by skimming off the top.

>If you sell the day before expiration does that mean the contract still expires the next day for the person who bought your contract or do they get another 3 months to work with?

No, it expires and they get the goods. If you're hanging onto it until the last minute then you're in a fucking bind because as some random financial speculator you're probably not in the position to accept the goods, and whoever you're selling to probably knows that. futures and options were originally supposed to be hedging tools: i sell oil, i think the price of oil is going to dump, i will sell a bunch of futures contracts so that i can lock in a high price now instead of selling in 2 months when i actually have production ready petroleum and the price as dumped, futures, forwards, and options are hedging tools that can also be used for speculation

They will pay you for taking the barrel.
What it means after your futures contract expires you have to take responsibility for the commodity as a physical asset. Hence pay transporting and storage fees.
You can buy 1 million barrels for -$20 per one
So you cash $20mil, buy tanker vessel, transport barrels to Panama.
Load 'em on to the tanker and dump them to the sea.

Contango just means speculative price (tomorrow) is higher than spot (today). This happens often with something like gold.. Rarely happens with something like oil.
Oil price does not usually exhibit Contango, because oil: traditionally has more use immediately than in the future, is expensive to move and to store and future price is hard to predict.
Gold almost always exhibits contango because it's fairly common to sell it for a higher price in the future.

I'm looking for “qualifications.” If one qualification is “general intelligence,” then an Ivy League degree might help. If a qualification is, “able to perform a finite element analysis on a structural design,” then the degree, taken alone, is nearly irrelevant. Some of these people come out of these ivy league schools and they are brilliant in all kinds of theory, but when I give them a sample problem they can't just DO it. Or they struggle to handle any project management, or they struggle with working with other engineers, or just realizing what is good enough versus over the top. Exceptions are certainly there, but, I've had better luck getting people from Georgia Tech and Purdue and just got an awesome one from Texas A&M. Smart farm or automotive kids that grew up tinkering and went to a decent engineering school, versus some fucking child prodigy that never got dirty as a kid. I have three from MIT and they are great for certain things, but, they aren't my goto guys despite being extremely intelligent.

WTI oil future went negative because of the storage costs. They can't just stop the oil production, the oil has to go somewhere. Storage in tankers costs money. So the negative price means they'll pay you to take the oil from their hands otherwise they will have to spend more on storing it themselves.

Also WTI is traded in 1000 Barrels/transaction. Please note you don't get the barrel, you get 1000 barrels worth of crude oil. Good luck storing that without proper storage units, i.e. a oil tanker.
