Can someone explain this about "pricing in".
It was obvious since January that the virus was going to come here as well and hit hard. Yet the market chugged along happily. Then suddenly, towards the end of February it started falling quickly.
Should I understand this as the markets suddenly deciding in February and March to price in all the problems with a pandemic that was obvious in January? If so, then what's to say the market won't suddenly decide next Tuesday to price in the disastrous unemployment numbers we have been seeing for weeks? Basically, does the "market can see into the future and prices everything in" meme have to be complemented with a "but you never know when the pricing in will happen" counter-meme?

Heh thanks! Very interesting!

In the US the state and federal governments have run the lottery for as long as I can remember. It’s considered a legal form of gambling so it’s allowed even in states where casinos are not allowed, because it’s all going towards raising government revenue. Basically adds to what is taken in through taxes, to help pave roads and pay off the debts.

>>18564679
The market isn’t all seeing and all knowing, and it’s not perfectly efficient like that. It’s just a model that’s useful for conceptualizing how the market works.

I would not say it was obvious to the majority of the money on Wall Street that it was obvious it would be bad here until it started getting very bad in Italy. Many of the big players saw the possibility and made plans, bought up ventilators and AK’s for their private islands. It took a while before the writing was on the wall and the dumping could really begin.

The employment numbers are a bit of a different phenomenon, they were “priced in” somewhat during the dump, and in the 10% dump when Goldman predicted the initial unemployment claims would be something like 2.5 million. Seems the market expected something like that was possible as it was doing the initial dump, but there was still a lot of scared money in there waiting to bail.

Something like that.

This isn't crypto, where the slightest news article can impact that stock markets. > European Central Bank officials have held high-level talks with counterparts in Brussels about creating a eurozone bad bank to remove billions of euros in toxic debts from lenders’ balance sheets.

>The plan to deal with debts left over from the 2008 financial crisis is being pushed by senior ECB officials, who worry the coronavirus pandemic will trigger another surge in non-performing loans (NPLs) that risks clogging up banks’ lending capacity at a critical time.

oil price relationship to equities is complicated. The worst case scenario in terms of potential long term recession is a very high bubbly oil price. Low oil price not so bad, although the initial falling out between OPEC and Russia likely did have a bearish impact on equities for that first couple weeks. But now low oil can be helpful for a lot of industries to get back on their feet with lower overhead costs for their oil needs.

Yes it has been, retard. Check the correlation coefficient.

Correlation doesn't mean that if oil goes up 5%, so does SP500. It only means the delta oil price will be reflected to the index, but the index can still live it's own life and end up in the opposite direction EOD. Correlation has been extremely strong for the whole past 3 months.

Reality.

There has been only few instances where us oil has not been reflected in the SP500 price and those have been momentary. You are basically betting on oil going up with SP500 and at the same time oil going down with oil short. Also, even if oil is going down more this week, it's extremely sensitive to huge rebounds after tanking nearly 20%. Short sp500 and long oil is much safer with a little bit of cross correlation hedge.

Thanks, very balanced perspective. Me, I hope like hell that the virus is overblown, the markets will blossom and that the worst of my problems will be having sold a bunch of stocks at the bottom that was then just 25% down, something I won't sweat if the economy hops along for 20 more years before I retire. But I have a feeling the effects of this virus will continue to surprise markets for a couple of years and that the line down will become a very intricate dance that is hard to pull away from and will pull everyone down, exactly like in 1929. And then maybe I'll buy back in again. If there's a V shaped recovery, and it somehow seems to be real after a few years, I'll also buy back in again.
