I used to root for ETFs until I started doing proper research on them and I got a pile of cash to put in them. I discovered they are the financial equivalent of cuckeldry. You're basically tell someone to choose the stocks for you while they fuck you up the ass with holding fees and operating fees. Also in some parts of Europe you have to pay annual taxes on whatever unrealized gains you made on the ETF.

What's your investing strategy? I'll start.

Long 40 value stocks. Sorted on EBITDA/TEV and rebalanced monthly.

Long 40 momentum stocks. Sorted on generic 12 month momentum skipping the last month + sorted on smoothness (https://www3.nd.edu/~zda/Frog.pdf).).

Trend following overlay:

Excess return is the total return over the past 12 months less return of the risk free rate. If excess return is above 0, then go long. Else short the market index using futures by 50% (of the portfolio value).

Moving Average (12) is the average of 12 monthly prices for the market. If the current price of the market - MA (12) is above 0, then go long. Else short the market index using futures by 50% (of the portfolio value).

Started this in 2007. The trend following rules saved me in 2008/2009 and now as well. I started using B/M (Fama French) for value but changed to EBITDA/TEV in 2011 and added the smoothness sort to momentum in early 2015.

Everything is based on academic research.

basically in stock trading there are many self-fulfilling prophecies you can trade based off of and fibb isn't one of them. you want the stuff that everyone knows about and uses, the tutes especially.

or to put it another way: all TA is trying to do is analyze where the buyers and sellers are at based on price action and volume. ideally you're trying to find around the level where buyers won't let the price go lower and the level where sellers won't let the price go higher. it also means if price breaks through an area where sellers won't let it go higher multiple times, there is a good chance the sellers have sold everything and now the price can be bid higher, making it a good entry point. same for selling. this is basic breakout-related stuff, another thing that tons of people and tutes trade based on thus making it useful. to buy low and sell high you have to know where everyone else in the room is buying and where they're selling at, basically, and that's what TA does.

>It's a self fulfilling prophecy

that's not a problem, that's fine. you're just trying to find where the buyers and sellers are at any given moment, where the areas of value are located and how price and volume react when they reach those areas.

in forex, the banks take price in the opposite direction of what the majority is doing, so you actually want to be a special snowflake there. but in stocks? it's the opposite. you want to buy at a level where there will be a ton of buying, people buying is what bids the price higher and makes you money. if you know a lot of people are buying at a relevant spot then it means you can have a relatively small risk compared to a potentially much greater reward, and risk to reward is all that really matters in the game of trading.
