I’m pretty far behind on 401k savings and i have no family, no children, no waifu or house. What happens if i just say YOLO and stop putting money in? What happens to old people without retirement savings? Why do i need like a million dollars when im 70 anyway?

well, if you pay off a house, at least you'll have that. if you're in a high cost of living area, sell the house and move somewhere cheap and live off of the difference + social security and medicare. totally do-able, maybe get a part-time job at mcdonalds or walmart to keep active. then wait to die :)

What most boomers are doing now is reverse mortgaging their homes so that they get some money to live off of as they die and the bank gets to keep the house at the end. I remember when property was a multi generational asset for the family, not anymore.

europoor here, in the sophisticated welfare state of the nordics we have the thing called senior-pension which gives you 1000-5000 dollars per month depend of your former paycheck. minimum is 900 dollars which you get automatically even if you hadn't been working when you were young.

Most current retirees are living exclusively off of social security, pensions, or other investment income because currently retired people worked the majority of their years before 401k plans completely pushed out pension plans.

401ks are the retirement plans for Gen X, millennials, and the younger boomers.

Fuck retirement at 60+, it's the biggest scam that is designed to leech your best years (30-60) and make you feel like you'll finally be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor when your body is failing and you spend every three days at a different doctor's office. Fuck 401ks, IRAs, Roth IRAs, etc. Use the money now in taxable accounts. There's no guarantee you'll even live past tomorrow so better to save/invest in an account you can access whenever you want.
