Have you ever had a successful business venture?

About 6 years ago I started getting really interested in brick and stonemasonry, so I watched a lot of youtube videos on how to do it, read a bunch of books, and bought tools and practiced in my parents' back yard.

I eventually got a job with a charity housing development program that builds homes for poorfags and worked as a 1099 contractor for them, and they paid breddy gud since all salaries were tax writeoffs.

I started posting my work on facebook and through word of mouth got offered a lot of side jobs by people, making patios, walkways, BBQ pits, stone underpinning for mobile homes, I even managed to make a pretty good fireplace. The more I did it the better I got at it.

I took a year off and was about to get back into it then coronavirus happened, so now I'm chilling in my house doing nothing. Anyone have any similar stories?

Currently working for the police doing digital forensics. Hoping to get myself some skills/contacts so that I can eventually transition myself in to working privately or freelance in a few years. Might even start up my own lab down the line, but that’s decades away.

Got a degree in it at university since I always enjoyed forensics and computers, figured I might as well just merge the 2 together. Also figured crime ain’t going away anytime soon and the way things are going literally every case is gunna have some form of a digital aspect to it. Left uni and did shit restaurant work until I got accepted somewhere for a forensics job. Not been working in the field long but some of the stories are pretty crazy. Could even write a book done the line about the shit I’ve seen/experienced.

In the UK and im sure in America, (if thats where you are anon?) You can make some serious money doing stonemasonry. A friend trained as a stonemason and has been doing some big projects lately. I helped him price some jobs up and was shocked at how much he could make. One job was renovating the stone work at a big mansion and replacing the driveway and it was going to net him £250k. He's a rubbish business man though so ended up fucking it up unfortunately, but if you are reliable and know your stuff or can at least learn quick on your feet you can make some serious cash.

when I was 21 I was a "meme warrior" in 2015 I made some stuff on youtube on stuff I made on my phone/ipad. Then from that ad revenue I bought a MacBook Air; I know shit but still and upgrade. From their I started making better meme videos with FCP, Motion & Photoshop. Then I started dating a roastie who worked in a talent agency and from that when I started getting big $$ freelance jobs. I got to travel to Hawaii, New York, Australia, and Switzerland. I edited vlogs, stuff for certain think tanks. Did high paying gig in Aus for the gay marriage thing where I made an anti-gay marriage ad. Then I started working in studio city in LA. I was just editing weed commercials and banners for the weed business whatever else my manager could throw at me.

Then one day I come in with a green protein shake and fat whale says "that looks gross"

I responded with "not as gross as your muffin top"

her crying whale sounds still crack me up to this day. Was fired on the spot but my manager thought it was pretty funny lol.

Then I edited porn for a few months. Got paid in crypto. Made like $5k from editing porn and that $5k turned into around $40k during the 2017 crypto bull run.

Was a need from 2017-mid 2019.

I started Nursing school a few months ago but still comfy on from the money I made

Is working with lime putty much different then working with cement? I see lots of old brickwork ruined with cement. Would like to learn how to repair.

>> No.18467869

>>18467586
What kind of cement? In masonry if you're not using lime or portland, you're fucking over your client, and they're both considered classes of cement. Lime has good flexibility and autogenous healing. The set time is shit but the permeability makes it much better for most jobs. The only time I ever use portland instead of lime is if I'm doing any work in a damp or wet area, since portland can set while wet due to impermeability regarding water.

>> No.18467890

>>18467586
>>18467869
Also if you want to learn how to "repair shitty old mortar work" you need to learn a process called repointing stone. That's something you'll have to look up but it's not a very tedious process and you can probably do it yourself without the help of an experienced mason if you have at least two functional brain cells.

Hope this helps.

It isn't about undercutting competition. The profit margin on turning rough granite into a countertop is pretty high. The downside is the tools required to do it efficiently are pretty expensive and take up a lot of room.

I personally haven't done any granite countertops. Backsplashes and bathroom finish tiling are the closest thing to finish masonry I've ever done. I'm more of a structural mason so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

Congrats. Every tiler I've ever met has been a total bro and pleasure to work with when we cross paths.

That being said my biggest piece of advice in masonry is to work out regularly and don't eat shitty food. Stay hydrated and stay active. If your body doesn't work, you don't make any money. You absolutely NEED to stay in shape and fit. Do lots of stretches, eat nutritious meals at regular intervals, don't overeat, and lookup exercises to strengthen your back and core.

I have known many very skilled masons forced into early retirement because their health habits were poor. You absolutely have to get in the gym if you want to make it past 50. Another good tip I can say is don't get too greedy. Don't make yourself work 6-7 days a week. You need rest. Spend time with your wife and kids. Play fetch with your dog. Play some video games. Read a book.

Nice thread for once. I spent the last year and a half gathering contacts, going to networking events, visiting companies on the pretext of being a designer of sorts. I have a BS in a health science and I've never had a job in that or designing, so it's kinda rough. I haven't "designed" anything in probably a year at this point, but I'm about to start a research/trainee position at a university with a man I believe to be a genius who does industrial design. He showed a lot of interest in what little I did and now I'm going to try to learn from him. I still have the vision, but times where I can work on my potential business is spent trying to learn a language, looking for a new job, and learning how to program. I'm thinking of rolling them all into one and make a website where I write in the language and populate with a portfolio.
I'm lost, but this research position seems to be my light at the moment, I can see it giving me valuable skills, I just hope I don't have to choose between a semi-paid trainee position and a job offer better than my own. I also have to learn to avoid thots.

I was actually supposed to move to the US to work inhouse for them but the corona thing cockblocked me. Im making pretty decent money, I get mentored by some of the top guys in the industry and I honestly like my work even though it can be stressful sometimes. top guys in my field can rake in high six to seven figures so I just wanna see how far I can push it. its also pretty sweet because I can work from literally anywhere and its a skill where you can just get better and better. and the better you get the more money you make because I get a percentage on all the sales I create for my clients.

>Step 0: Get Your Own House in Order (Personal Finance)
How do you expect to run a business if you don't know how to run your own finances? This has two outcomes that directly translate to running your business: learning basic accounting principles and raising “seed money” for your business as part of your savings plan. Accounting: The key to a good financial picture is positive cash flow. Cash flow = income – expenses. Make sure you have a positive cash flow. Not just in your head, create a spreadsheet that tracks income and expenses every month and KNOW THE EXACT NUMBER. Reduce expenses until you meet your cash flow goal. With your positive cash flow, set some money aside for retirement (401k and IRA) and emergency fund (something liquid and low risk: cash, savings account, bonds. NOT FAGGOT CRYPTO). Also set aside “seed money” for business ventures and other investments. This will set the foundation for running a successful business. I just gave abstract concepts but you need to have concrete numbers and goals. It's ok if you don't meet your goals at first, just make progress each month until you meet them and don't set unreasonable goals (living on 10% of your income and saving 90%)

This is very abstract but a lot to cover so good enough for now. If /dbg/ gains traction I can add more concrete examples and useful links

(part 2/?)

Step 1: Write a business plan (this does not have to be complicated. Just collection of thoughts and crude battle plan. U.S. Small Business Administration has a good example, scroll down to the “Lean Startup Plan” and there's a Word doc: https://www.sba.gov/business-guide/plan-your-business/write-your-business-plan )
What is your business: what are your products and/or services and who are your customers?
What is the market: who are your competitors (supply)? How large of a market (demand)?
Cash flow considerations: What does it cost you to provide the product/service? How much do you plan to sell it for? Try to estimate a monthly cash flow
Competitive advantage: What is your business's competitive advantage? Why will a customer choose you and more importantly STAY with you? Cheap prices? (called cost leadership in douche MBA speak). Superior product? Superior customer service? Early entrant in the market? Determine what separates you and be the BEST at it

>Step 2: Corporate structure (most likely LLC formation if you need liability protection)
Determine Business Structure: Do you need liability protection? If you are operating a business that is at risk of getting sued (not a question of if it CAN happen but more a question of your RISK TOLERANCE of it happening). Think of it as buying an insurance policy. If the business goes bankrupt you are not personally liable for paying off the debt as long as you maintain the corporate veil (more on that later). One last point: this provides FINANCIAL protection. Obviously if you commit a crime while operating your business a corporate structure does not protect you from that.
1) If you don't need liability protection then you can operate as a sole proprietorship. The income and losses are reported on your personal tax return. In my state you don't need to register a sole proprietorship, I don't know about every other state. However you may need to register for a permit with state or local government depending on your business.
2) If you do need liability protection then an LLC will most likely meet your business needs. If you register as a single-member LLC then you get the liability protection afforded to a corporation and the benefit of simply reporting income and losses on your personal tax return. Multi-member LLCs and other corporate structures have more stringent requirements and you should meet with a business lawyer

(continuation of previous post)
LLC Formation: Typically LLCs are registered via your state's Secretary of State. Just search “[YOUR STATE] llc formation”. Cost to register varies but will probably be a couple hundred dollars. For example, in Texas the cost to register an LLC is $300
Maintaining the Corporate Veil: This concept is critically important to keep the liability protection afforded by an LLC. If you mess this up you will have gone through the process of starting an LLC for nothing but more importantly you will be personally liable for any debts your business owes. Your BUSINESS becoming bankrupt turns into YOU becoming bankrupt. The concept is fairly simple but needs to be diligently followed. You must keep your business account separate from your personal bank account (i.e. you charge business expenses to your business bank account and you charge personal expenses to your personal bank account). You will need to open a business bank account (more on that in next post). With this account you'll get a debit card and you can apply for a business credit card depending on the bank you choose. For business expenses use your BUSINESS CARD. For personal expenses use your PERSONAL CARD. Again, this is a simple concept but critically important. Transferring money from your personal bank account to your business bank account DOES NOT pierce the corporate veil. In your accounting software or spreadsheet if you do manual accounting categorize that transaction as OWNER INVESTMENT. If your business turns a profit (congrats!) transferring money from your business account to your personal bank account DOES NOT pierce the corporate veil. Categorize this transaction as an OWNER DRAWING. Categorization of transactions is important for tax purposes. Luckily there is free accounting software available online so you don't need to be an expert or hire outside help for a small operation.

>Step 3: Keep the business running (Some helpful services for your business)

Business bank account: Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Azlo provide nice features for small businesses: low deposit to create the account and no transaction fees (with limits that you will learn when you do your research). Obviously BoA and Wells Fargo are brick-and-mortar banks that provide traditional banking services. Azlo is an entirely online bank owned by BBVA. No minimum deposit to create an account and no/little fees if I remember right. One drawback is no checks and no cash deposits since it's an online only bank. Good for online businesses or businesses that don't involve any cash. Many other options out there, both for traditional and online-only banks. Do your research and make sure you search for "business bank accounts" and not personal accounts

Accounting: Can be done as simply as having a spreadsheet that tracks income and expenses. If you do this make sure you know what you're doing and CATEGORIZE TRANSACTIONS. For almost everyone I recommend using an accounting software. Wave is a free software available online. I believe the accounting and invoice services are free up to a certain income level for your business. There are other softwares available (QuickBooks, etc.). Do your research and pick what works best for your business. And remember to CATEGORIZE TRANSACTIONS.

Domain Name and E-mail Hosting: Several services available: Namecheap, GoDaddy, etc. Allows you to own a URL and business email (name@business.com) for as little as $2/month. I don't think I need to explain to other anons the importance of having a website for your business even if you aren't an online business.

(continuation of last post)
Website builder: Wix, SquareSpace, Weebly, etc. Allows you to easily create a website and online store if you aren't a programmer like me. Fairly more expensive but certainly not a prohibitive cost (~$10-25/month depending on what you choose). Research is important for this because each web builder offers distinct advantages (COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE) so you need to know what you need for your business and choose the best service provider for what you need.

Marketing: Facebook ads, Google ads, etc. There's a lot to talk about here and the most important aspect after creating a superior product/service.

I need to go to bed so that's it for now. This should be a good foundation. It's very abstract but leaves crumbs for more research and more concrete planning for your business (or future business when you come up with one and have the finances required to start it). If an anon picks this up and keeps a /dbg/ running i'll hop in and answer questions/drop some helpful links. I know I didn't leave a lot of that today, I just needed to get the basics down quick
