i think it's a bug in 4chan's code where 2 images were posted with the same timestamp (or the image shrinking compute job finished at the same time as another image) and there was a "collision" of the result.

he probably knows but it's so rare that it doesn't matter. when you look at the image url that 4chan makes, it's the same as the milliseconds since January 1, 1970 - it's just a timestamp. but since it's used as a unique key it means that if 2 images are assigned the same timestamp (same millisecond), then only one will "win". you could probably fix it by assigning each image a random ID that is truly unique...there are many ways to do this better but 4chan is probably running on crappy code from 12+ years ago that no one gives enough of a shit to actually fix
